How Singapore LTA’s Upcoming Road and Infrastructure Projects Will Enhance Commuter Journeys The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in Singapore has planned to expand the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network to about 360km by 2030. LTA is working with public transport operators like SMRT Corporation to renew North-South and East-West MRT lines. But this is just the beginning. Beyond building new rail lines and enhancing existing ones, LTA is also building the road and commuter infrastructure to provide comfortable, accessible, and inclusive transport system to all Singapore. Let’s check out what are the upcoming projects of LTA that could enhance road safety, commuting experience, and provide better road connectivity to Singaporeans. 1.Integrated Transport Hubs: Integrated Transport Hubs (ITHs) are fully air-conditioned bus interchanges that are linked to MRT stations and adjoining commercial developments. With ITHs, people can comfortably shop or do other works before transferring to their connecting buses or trains. There are nine ITHs as of 2018 including Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Lay, Clementi, Joo Koon, Sengkang, Serangoon, Toa Payoh, and Bukit Panjang. SMRT Buses opened the Bukit Panjang Integrated Transport Hub with a host of innovative, commuter-friendly features. SMRT is also working on enhancing the accessibility features of Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub. Commenting on the same, SMRT CEO, Neo Kian Hong, said: “Keeping Singapore moving is more than just providing safe and reliable trains and buses. It is about developing an ecosystem of connected services from home to destination.” He added, "We have also made navigating the new Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub more intuitive for the visually impaired. We will focus our mission of delivering a world-class transport service and lifestyle experience that is safe, reliable, and customer-centred.” 2.North-South Corridor: It is a Transit Priority Corridor with dedicated bus lanes, cycling trunk routes, and pedestrian paths. Expected to be completed by 2027, it will directly connect the Northern region and the city centre. The North-South Corridor will ensure smoother, faster journeys, helping people save an average of 10 to 15 minutes of travel time. 3.A new road interchange at Senja/Kranji Expressway (KJE): This new road interchange will allow motorists to enjoy greater accessibility and faster commute. Roads will be widened at Senja Road and Senja Link as well as the stretch of the KJE to improve the traffic flow. Similarly, a new road interchange at Seletar Link/Tampines Expressway (TPE) will also be constructed and expected to be completed by the 2nd quarter of 2022. 4.TPE/PIE/Changi Viaduct: Works an undergoing for the construction of a two-lane one-way viaduct from TPE(Changi) to the PIE(Westbound) and Upper Changi Road East. Motorists can take the direct routethrough the new TPE-PIE Changi Viaduct and avoid high traffic areas. Conclusion Singapore land and public transportation systems are improving.
