  1. LTA is Strengthening Charging Infrastructure and Public Education to Increase EV Adoption With the increasing pollution levels, it’s important now more than ever for the electrification of mass-market transportation. The Singapore government has made a great push for electric vehicle adoption in 2021 and this year and unveiled several schemes. Recently, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced that it will expand the electric vehicle (EV) charging network in public car parks. LTA will also enhance the MyTransport.SG mobile application to provide information on charging points to the public. Read on to know how LTA is strengthening charging infrastructure and public education to increase EV adoption. Singapore’s 2040 Vision Singapore’s 2040 vision is to phase out internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and have all vehicles run on cleaner energy. This will require a large-scale, multi-agency effort to provide charging infrastructure, upgrade the electrical grid, and electrify public vehicles. To help Singapore fulfill this vision, A*STAR ’s Institute of High-Performance Computing (IHPC) and TUMCREATE Ltd (TUMCREATE) are working together on a research project that supports Singapore’s planning for the transition to electric vehicles. IHPC and TUMCREATE are working on two primary simulation technologies. The first technology - City Mobility Simulator (CityMoS) - will enable high-detail transport simulation of the entire island of Singapore. The second technology - Multi Energy System Modelling & Optimisation (MESMO) - will use simulation of electrical grids and optimisation techniques to mitigate the grid impact of energy resources. More EV Charging Points at HDB Carparks The government and LTA are investing in installing EV charging points at 2,000 Housing Development Board (HDB) carparks. LTA will deploy an additional 12,000 charging points by 2025 to make every HDB town to be EV-Ready by 2025. EV Taxis by Transport Operators Transport operator SMRT announced recently that it will replace its entire fleet of taxis with EVs within the next five years. The fleet of EVs to be launched could include sedans, station wagons, and multi-purpose vehicles, SMRT had said. SMRT CEO, Neo Kian Hong, commented on the same and stated: “In line with the Singapore Green Plan 2030, our Roads Group, through its Strides Mobility brand, is committed to providing best-in- class mobility solutions with the lowest carbon footprint.” SMRT CEO further added:“Our taxi fleet became fully hybrid last year, and we have plans to convert our entire taxi fleet to electric vehicles in five years, commencing with the recent purchase of 300 MG 5 electric cars.” Similarly, the ride-hailing company, Grab is working with Hyundai to launch EV pilots in Southeast Asia including Singapore to encourage EV adoption among Grab drivers and delivery persons. New Enhancements to the MyTransport.SG App LTA is adding new features to the MyTransport.SG mobile application to help drivers easily locate EV charging points. The app will initially provide information on more than 800 public charging points at over 200 locations across Singapore.

  2. The MyTransport.SG mobile app will also display accurate information such as pricing, power rating, and plug type to enable drivers to plan their charging schedules. Increasing EV Adoption with Public Education LTA will launch a new public education campaign to raise awareness of EVs. The campaign will inform Singaporeans about the benefits of EV vehicles and how to share charging infrastructure. Conclusion Singapore is one of the 20 countries that have announced the full phase-out of the internal combustion engine (ICE) over the next 10‑30 years. To transition to EVs requires more ambition and action among governments, market leaders, and end-users. In Singapore, LTA is working with transport operators and leading institutes to strategically deploy charging infrastructure, increase EV adoption, and broaden regulatory instruments.
