This assignment involves a 10-minute in-class presentation on a topic related to extragalactic astronomy or cosmology, contributing 10% toward your total class grade. Presentations must include an introduction and a list of at least three references, one of which should be a recent article. Possible topics include galaxy formation scenarios, dark matter halos, elliptical and spiral galaxies, active galaxies, and more. Presentations are scheduled for Nov. 22, Nov. 25, Dec. 2, and Dec. 4. Topic choices are due by Nov. 13.

Final “homework” (worth 10% of total class grade) is an in-class presentation of a topic of your choosing. Talk should be no more than 10 minutes long with 2-3 minutes for questions. You can talk about any topic related to extragalactic astronomy or cosmology. Talks should include an introduction and a list of references (at three). You can use your text books as references but at least one recent article on the topic should be cited. Four talks will be given on each of the following dates: Nov 22, Nov 25, Dec 2and Dec 4. Some possible topics: Galaxy Formation scenarios Galaxy Cluster or Group formation/evolution Dark Matter Halos – simulations, formation Elliptical Galaxies (e.g. extension of Fundamental Plane to low mass E’s) Spiral Galaxies (e.g. disk formation and metallicity enrichment) Density – Morphology Relation Determining extragalactic distances Active Galaxies (star formation and feedback) Intermediate Mass Black Holes Cosmological models and tests The early Universe – formation of first stars/galaxies Structure evolution in the Universe Titles/Topics need to be decided by Nov 13th. Please come to class that day prepared to give me your topic choice or email me beforehand. Numbers will be drawn to determine talking order.
