  1. STAAR OBJECTIVE QUESTIONS Strategies for Success

What is STAAR? • STAAR is the new state test that evaluates your learning. • You will take the STAAR Writing test on April 2-3. • You will take the test over two day. • Day 1 – one writing prompt and the first half of the multiple choice. • Day 2 – second writing prompt and the second have of the multiple choice. • You will take the STAAR Reading test later.

  3. Strategy 1 Carefully read all instructions. Each passage will deal with either revising or editing, but not both. Be sure you know what you are supposed to do in each passage.

  4. Strategy 2 Quickly scan the passage to be read.This is so you have a general understanding of what the passage is about.

  5. Strategy 3 As you scan the passage, mark obvious corrections using editor’s marks.This will help you quickly see changes that need to be made when you evaluate the questions.

  6. Strategy 4 Write the down main idea, thesis or themeof the passage in one complete sentence at the top of the passage.This will help remind you what the focus of the topic is supposed to be.

  7. Strategy 5 Carefully readthe first question. Analyze the question and highlight important words. What change, if any, should be made in sentence 5? This helps you focus on what the question wants you to do.

  8. Strategy 6 Highlight the sentence or sentences in the passage discussed in the question. Using two colors of highlighters can be helpful. Be sure you use the same color in the passage that you use in the question related to the part you highlighted. If you only have one highlighter, use the highlighter, and then alternate by underlining with your pencil.

  9. Strategy 7 Carefully read each answer choice and cross off any answers that are obviously incorrect. Make a note about why it is wrong next to the answer choice.

  10. Strategy 8 Test possible correct answers in the passage by inserting them into the sentences and reading them. This helps if you have more than one that you can’t decide between. Which one seems most correct?

  11. Strategy 9 Next to the correct answer choice, write down the reason it is the BEST answer. If you can do this, you know for sure you have it correct. Hint: “It sounds right” is not a reason.

  12. Strategy 10 If the question asks you the BEST way to rewrite ideas: A. Read the sentences in the passage, B. Re-write them in you own words in the margin of the test. C. Analyzethe answer choices D. Look for an answer that most closely matches your sentence. This may be the correct choice. Be sure you think about it carefully. • REMEMBER: Just removing a period or changing it to a comma does not successfully combined two sentences thateach contains a complete idea.

  13. Strategy 11 Circle or highlight your answer choice in your test booklet. Be sure to transfer your answers to your answer document. Remember, you have four hourseach day to complete that day’s portion of the test. Budget your time wisely.
