Medical Science Research Program (MSRP) Summer Research between MS-1 and MS-2 Short-term (10 weeks); fellowships are funded via Training Grants, Private Organizations and a Trust Fund College of Medicine Research Track (COMRT) The COMRT is an optional program that allows students to extend the summer research experience and participate in an extended research program, at least 26 weeks during their 4 year MD degree Research Year between MS-2 & MS-3 or MS-3 & MS-4 Internal, at UFCOM External at NIH or another Institution MD/PhD

Summer Research Summer Research between MS-1 & MS-2 Short-term (10 weeks) research experience Can be clinical, basic or epidemiological research Students are required to attend a seminar series on the Responsible Conduct of Research Students submit a Final Progress Report on their research, and evaluate the program and their mentor Participation Between 1999 and 2004: ~20 - 25 students/year 2005: 39 MS-1 students + 6 Prematriculants 2006: 66 MS-1 students + 7 Prematriculants

    6. College of Medicine Research Track (COMRT) Students can extend their Summer Research experience into the COMRT Students normally perform their 26 weeks of research between years 1 & 2 (10 weeks), and as 16 weeks of research electives. The electives may be performed in year 3 (by deferring a clinical rotation) and year 4, or all in year 4 Students perform an individualized research project, take seminars in the Responsible Conduct of Research, Manuscript and Grant writing Students participate in the Medical Research Interest Group (MRIG)

    7. College of Medicine Research Track Recruiting (Regular Admissions) Interested students include a COMRT statement on their AMCAS application Applications are screened and students are paired with apropriate interviewers Presentations to Interviewees Follow-up with accepted students Presentation at Orientation Recruiting (Junior Honors)

    8. College of Medicine Research Track Students enroll in the COMRT during their first year of medical school, or after their Summer Research experiences Participation Class of 2006: 2 Class of 2007: 11** Classes of 2008 & 2009: ~ 50 ** All are taking 4th year research electives

MRIG Programming Lunch time seminars covering various research/academic medicine related topics Opportunities for Research Shadowing Resources and articles on research career paths, available fellowships, advice, and mentoring Topics The Clinician Scientist Track Why is it important for Clinicians to do research? Careers in a COM (Research; Clinical; Teaching; Administration) Extramural Research Opportunities Medical Student Research Presentations (Research Day winners) Manuscript Writing/Fellowship Writing

    11. College of Medicine Research Track COMRT Completion: Completion of at least 26 weeks of research Students prepare a Research Manuscript that is ready for submission to a scientific journal. They must be first or co-first author Letter of support from their research mentor Students submit a one page summary describing their research activities Student packets are reviewed by the MSRP Committee Students who fulfill the requirements can Graduate with Honors for Outstanding Research, and receive recognition (COMRT Certificate & Honors Tassels) at graduation

    12. Research Year Intramural Funded via P.I. Grant or via an External Foundation Extramural NIH/HHMI Cloister Program Students who complete Research Years normally fulfill the COMRT research requirement.
