  2. CSTEP • NYS Department of Education, Office of K-16 Initiative and Access Programs • Budgeted for $130,000 over next 4-years • Provide services for 90 Scholars • Works in partnership with McNair

  3. CSTEP serves undergraduate, graduate or professional school students admitted to two or four-year institutions in New York State. CSTEP Purpose • To increase the number of historically underrepresented students who enroll in and complete undergraduate or graduate programs leading to professional licensure or to careers in science, mathematics, technology , engineering (STEM), and health related fields.

  4. Scholars Eligibility • New York State residents; • Economically disadvantaged; or • Black, Hispanic, Alaskan Native or Native American Indian; and • Enrolled in STEM or licensure qualifying programs

  5. McNair Scholars Program • SUNY Oswego since Sept. 2004 through U.S. Dept of Education • Budget of $231,000 for a four-year period • Provide services for up to 25 Scholars annually • Eight-Week intensive research project • 181 programs nation-wide

  6. McNair Scholars Program Purpose Provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral study. McNair serves undergraduate and/or graduate matriculated students admitted to four-year or more IHE

  7. Scholar Eligibility • First Generation & Low-Income; or • Underrepresented group in graduate studies • Underrepresented within a major • U.S. Citizen • 2.75 or better cum GPA

  8. Scholar Eligibility • Talented Sophomores • Junior or Rising Senior Class Status • Completed Application • Faculty Recommendation • Desire to pursue doctoral study • McNair Staff Interview

McNair/ CSTEP Scholars Preparation & Services • Opportunities for research or other scholarly activities • Internships • Seminars and other educational activities • Tutoring & standardized graduate school test preparation • Academic/ Social/ Profession counseling • Activities designed to assist in admissions to and financial assistance for enrollment in graduate programs

McNair/ CSTEP Scholar Preparation • Mentoring programs involving institutions of higher education, other Scholars or any combination of such persons • Exposure to cultural events and academic programs not usually available to disadvantaged students • Financial support for conferences, graduate school fairs, etc. • Oral/ Poster Presentation Preparation

  12. McNair/ CSTEP Scholar Career Awareness • Like CSTEP, McNair Scholars are provided high-level research training linked to their coursework, interests and future graduate work • Access to employment, graduate and professional school recruitment opportunities

CSTEP Approved Majors designated by the NYSED requiring a license NYS Resident No research project or intensive summer program participation required No Stipend, but fiscal support for supplies, travel McNair Majors requiring a Ph.D. U.S. Citizen Intensive 8-week summer research program is required for participation $400 stipend per academic semester $2000 stipend for Summer Research Program So, What’s the Difference?
