  3. Who is Mai Bhago? • Born in village of Jhabal • Raised in a family of devoted Sikhs • Had great admiration for Guru • Described as incredibly courageous

  4. Impact on Sikhism • Reign of Mughal Dynasty • Sikhs either renounce faith or leave • Cut off food and water supplies • Many Sikhs died of starvation • Muslims swore to give Sikhs safe passage • Sikhs were attacked

  5. Impact on Sikhism Cont. • Battle of Mukstar (1705) • 40 men abandoned battle • Mai Bhago found and chastised men • Encouraged them to return to battle • Led them back into battle herself • Fought in the battle and was wounded

  6. Impact on Sikhism Cont. • Vowed to suffer death for Guru • Took out many Muslim soldiers herself • 40 deserters laid down their lives • Mughal soldiers were forced to retreat • Bhago recovered from wounds • Became Guru’s bodyguard until his death • Her house converted into a holy site

  7. Why did I choose her? • Female warrior • Courageous attitude made her successful • Not submissive • Speaks her mind • Makes no apologies for who she is
