  1. Poker Tournament Terms & Definitions Going to participate in a Poker tournament for the first time or intrigued by the platform? Then this article is for you. Your ultimate objective, as a participant, is to win all the chips available in front of you on the table. The player who eliminates all his opponents and survives at the table until the end of the game becomes the 1stprize winner. He gets the largest share of the guaranteed prize pool. All other top finishers get a share of the prize pool as per their finishing position. To learn Poker basics, there is a lot of study material available in the form of books, blogs, and video tutorials. What matters the most is familiarizing yourself with the terms and phrases that players use at the table in order to quickly understand the situation and make informed decisions. Here are some of the most common terms you will encounter at a Poker tournament table – Starting stack Every participant receives a predetermined amount of chips at the beginning of the game, which is called the starting chip stack. Buy-in

  2. Buy-in is the entry-fee that every player has to pay to enter the tournament. The player cannot continue playing once he loses all his chips during a hand.. The amount of money collected as the buy-ins creates the total prize pool of the tournament. Blinds Players sitting left the dealer button post the small blind and big blind respectively before card distribution to initiate the betting round. The blinds increase steadily during the game (for example-in every 10 or 15 minutes) Bankroll It is the amount of money dedicated to playing Poker only. Your bankroll saves you from the negative financial effects of losing money at the tables. Your bankroll should be equals to 40- 50 buy-ins when you play live and equals to 90-100 buy-ins when you play online. Re-Buy ‘Re-buy’ is a feature that allows the participants to bring more chips to the table when they run out of chips or their chip stack goes below a certain level. The number of re-buy depends on the rules of the tournament. The re-buy feature is available at the beginning of the tournament for a limited period of time. Once this period expires, you have to leave the table if you lose your entire chip stack. On The Bubble - A stage in the tournament where the next participant who gets eliminated from the table does not get anything from the prize pool, but the remaining players do. For example - If the tournament rule states that the top 5 players will get paid, then ‘on the bubble’ situation occurs when there are only 6 players left in the game. The player, who gets bubbled, doesn’t get any share from the prize pool. In the Money (ITM) - A stage in the game where all the remaining players get a share of the prize money as per their finishing position.

  3. If you are a beginner, playing free online poker games is the best way to learn about different aspects of the game as well as gain experience of the intense competition at the tables before switching to participate in real money poker tournaments.
