“Can’t We All Just Get Along?”An Interactive Workshop on Cultural Competency and Inter-cultural Sensitivity
Tips for Increased Cultural Awareness • Build your cultural knowledge: Try and learn more about other cultures and countries. Information is easily available on-line or in books. You may also want to ask your colleagues, friends, etc. • Treat people as individuals: Stereotypes about other cultures is usually based upon generalizations. This means that information may not apply to every member of that culture . Be aware of this and try to deal with people as individuals. • Implement your cultural knowledge: Once you have gained useful information about a culture it is time to put that knowledge into action. • Withhold Assumptions: Try to avoid jumping to conclusions about people. One of the first rules of cultural awareness is refrain from assuming one way is wrong and one is right. • Don’t treat others as YOU would want to be treated. Try to learn how THEY would want to be treated. What is viewed as kind and caring in one culture may be considered rude and uncaring in another culture.
Tips for Increased Cultural Awareness (cont.) • Louder does not mean better: Making a telephone call is just about the most difficult thing to do in a foreign language. When speaking to anyone who has a foreign accent over the telephone, speak slowly, simply, and clearly. Don’t show impatience and give that person all your attention. • Sources: • Malone, B.L.
