DIY Wind Generator from Plywood and Magnets

This project outlines the creation of a homemade wind generator using simple materials like plywood, wooden dowels, and magnets. The design features the attachment of fan blades to a brass rod, and a Coke bottle filled with water is used for added weight. With a total cost of $38, we detail the equations for calculating kinetic energy and theoretical power, alongside actual readings. Challenges included selecting the right components and achieving stable voltage output. Our final efficiency was measured at just 0.2%. Explore our build process and references for more insights.

  2. Description • Summary: Our generator was made by gluing two pieces of plywood to each end of four wooden dowels. We then attached four magnets onto a brass rod and ran it through a hole we had drilled out in the box. Finally, we put the fan blades on, added a coke bottle filled with water to add weight, and mounted the entire thing on a ply wood base.

  3. Materials • Materials list: - Enamel coated wire ($21.00) - 4 magnets (2 x $3.00) - Fan blade ( cost of fan $7.00) - Brass rod ($1.00) - plywood ($2.00) - 1 wood dowel ($1.00) • Total Cost: $38.00

  4. Calculations • Equations: KE = ½ mv^2 P = 1/2ρ(air)Av^3 (theoretical) Efficiency = P (actual)/ P (theoretical) • Readings: - Volts: 2.5 volts - (theoretical ) Power: 104 watts - (actual) Power: 0.213 watts - efficiency: 0.2%

  5. Problems • Problems Encountered: - Finding the proper wire and magnets to use. - Finding which fan blade would work best. - Not producing enough volts. - Originally had an unstable generator.
