2. Number Bonds Number Bonds is emphasized prior to the learning of addition. Children are given, say, 5 unifix cubes and guided to see that 1 and 4 make 5, for example. Others may say that 3 and 2 make 5 or 4 and 1 make 5. Yet others may say that 5 and 0 make 5. Earlybird Kindergarten Mathematics (Standards Edition)

24. singaporemathinaction Two materials are used on this textbook page – unifix cubes and maths balance. What mathematical concepts are embodied in these materials? Is the sequence developmental? Why the need to have both lessons? Think!

25. 3 + 1 = 4 The materials embody the part-whole concept and the notion of conservation of numbers. 3 + 4 = 7 The materials embody the concept of equality and give meaning to the equal sign. My Pals Are Here Mathematics Textbook 1A

26. The maths balance in a Singapore classroom is used with a teacher-created equation board to help first graders master the concept of the equal sign. Students who do not receive high-quality instruction often perceives the equal sign as a signal to give an answer and make mistakes such as 4 + 3 = 7 + 5. singaporemathinaction Princess Elizabeth Primary School

In fact mathematics is seen as ‘an excellent vehicle for the development and improvement of a person’s intellectual competence”. Summary
