  2. ACRID • Adjective • Definition- sharp, irritating or bitter to the sense of taste or smell • The food he had made was so acrid that I had to spit it out due to the sharp vinegar taste.

  3. CASUALTY • Noun • Definition- a person killed or injured in a war or accident • There was a big funeral ceremony for the many casualties of 9/11.

  4. CONGESTED • 1. Adjective • Definition- overcrowded; filled too full • The jar full of marbles was so congested, that you could not fit any more marbles in it. • 2. Adjective • Definition- filled with fluid • Because my nose was congested, it was pretty gross when I sneezed. • CONGESTION: • Noun • Definition- the condition of being overcrowded • The congestion on the highway was so bad it took some people half an hour to drive a mile.

  5. COPE • Verb • Definition- to manage problems or difficulties successfully • Extra police were on duty to cope with the large crowds expected for the 4th of July parade.

  6. HEADLONG • Adjective • Definition- with great speed or force; reckless • The crowd made a headlong rush for the best seats as soon as the doors were opened at the huge concert.

  7. HURTLE • Verb • Definition- to move with great force and speed • A huge rock hurtled down the side of the mountain during the avalanche.

  8. IMPEDE • Verb • Defintion- to get in the way of; to interfere with the movement of • The fallen tree on the road impeded the drivers that were trying to get to the other side.

  9. INEVITABLE • Adjective • Definition- bound to happen; unavoidable • Your destiny is inevitable; nothing can stop it from happening.

  10. INITIATE • 1. Verb • Definition- to put into affect; to put into use • Once you initiate the computer program, you have to wait until it is finished before you can do anything else. • 2. Verb • Definition- to take in as a member • After initiating the 5 new members, the Siddhi City Society could not take anymore new members into their organization due to their limitation of members.

  11. IRATE • Adjective • Definition- very angry; furious • The voters were irate when the governor broke the promise he had made before election to lower taxes.

  12. LAX • Adjective • Definition- not strictly enforced; undemanding; careless • School discipline was lax, as a result, students were running through the halls, littering, and getting hurt a lot.

  13. NEGLIGENT • Adjective • Definition- failing to take proper care of or to give proper attention to • The garage was found negligent in repairing the car’s brakes, so it was held responsible for the accident.

  14. SMOLDER • 1. Verb • Definition- to burn slowly without bursting into flames • Make sure the campfire is out, or it will continue to smolder. • 2. Verb • Definition- to exist in a hidden state before bursting into the open • A desire for freedom smoldered in the hearts of the people who escaped from Cuba to hopefully reach Miami, Florida.

  15. STRINGENT • Adjective • Definition- strict; severe • Sara’s parents are so stringent that when she got a 100% on her math test, they were mad at her for not getting the 2 extra credit points and as a result, they grounded her for a week.

  16. THRONG • 1. Noun • Definition- a large number of people gathered together; a crowd. • A throng formed on the street when the street performers started their excellent performances. • 2. Verb • Definition- to gather or move in large numbers • Crowds thronged the airport to greet the Olympic team.
