  1. AUT 112 Valve Adjustments From Cpt 30 Pgs 593 – 596

  2. Valve Adjustments • Engines with solid/mechanical valve mechanisms require periodic adjustment to insure that the proper free clearance exists between the valve operating mechanism and the valve itself.

  3. Valve Adjustments • The primary method of measuring valve clearance is with a feeler gauge. • Normally graduated by .001” • May also be purchased in metric increments.

  4. Valve Adjustments • When using a feeler gauge, the classic instructions state to insert the appropriate sized gauge and you should feel a slight drag when you move it. • I prefer that you use the Go, No/Go procedure.

  5. Valve Adjustments • There are three primary types of mechanical valve adjustments. • Shims • Screw Type • Rocker arm Post

  6. Valve Adjustments • Shim type valve adjusters use a “shim” machined to precise tolerances to act as both the cam follower and to make adjustments to the valve clearance.

  7. Valve Adjustments • Screw type adjusters.

  8. Valve Adjustments • Rocker Arm Post

  9. Valve Adjusting Procedure • Remove the spark plugs • Remove the rocker/cam cover. • Turn the engine, by hand, until the #1 piston is in the TDC Position on the compression stroke.

  10. Valve Adjusting Procedure • Set the valve clearance as specified by the manufacturer, like this. . .

  11. Valve Adjusting Procedure • Or like this.

  12. Valve Adjusting Procedure • Or like this.

  13. Valve Adjusting Procedure • After you’ve completed one cylinder, move to the next cylinder by firing order. • Place that cylinder in TCD compression and make your measurements/adjustments. • Continue the procedure until completed.
