What is a Joint Master Degree? • Highly integrated Master study programme delivered by international HEI consortium • Require study in at least two of the Programme Countries represented in the consortium • Can last 12, 18 or 24 months (60, 90, 120 ECTS) • Leads to the award of a double, multiple or joint degree to all successful students • Award full-study scholarships for students worldwide

Aims of the EMJMDs • Quality improvements, innovation, excellence, internationalisation of HEIs • Increase quality and attractiveness of the EHEA (e.g. Yerevan communiqué) – supporting EU External Actionin the HE field, by offering full degree scholarships to the best Master students worldwide • Improve competences, skills, employability of Master graduates • Improve relevance for the labour marketthrough an increased involvement of employers

EMJMD: Who can participate? • Publicor privateorganisations in Programme or Partner Countries • HEIs • Non-academic partners (enterprises, non-profit organisations, NGOs, foundations, etc.) • Applicant must be HEI established in Programme Country. The HEI applies on behalf of the EMJMD consortium.

EMJMD: how do they work? • Minimum EMJMD consortium composition: 3 HEIs as partners (including the coordinator) from at least 3 different Programme Countries • HEIs from Partner Countries can participate • Associate partners optional • Funding for 3 annual intakes of students and scholars, covering (project duration 4-5 years) • Total costs of students' scholarships • Annual flat rate fees for management and scholars

EMJMD funding rules The EU grant for an EMJMD will be indicatively ~ 4 million € HEIs:Contribution to the consortium management costs (incl. costs for invited scholars and guest lecturers) • 50.000 € per student intake (= 150.000 € in total) + 20.000 € for optional preparatory year Students: max 25.000 € per academic year and per scholarship Actual amount varies according to: • EMJMD's length of studies (60, 90 or 120 ECTS credits) • Student's country of residence • EMJMD level of participation costs

EMJMD Call: How to apply? 1/2 • EMJMD Consortium Agreement shouldbesignedbeforeapplying - it must cover all academic, operational, administrative and financial aspects • Programme-Country institutions submit a proposal on behalf of an international consortium • Proposals assessed by experts on basis of relevance, quality of design, quality of team, impact and dissemination + additional criteria for additional scholarships

EMJMD Call: How to apply? 1/2 • Deadline: 16 February 2017 – 12:00 CET • Budget: ~ 90 M€ + ~ 25 M€ for "targeted regions" • Nr. of projects: ≈ 35 EMJMDs • Nr. of scholarships per intake/per project: • ~ 20 (around 60 per Grant Agreement) plus • ~ 8 (around 24 per Grant Agreement) for targeted regions • Award decision: by July 2017

Jean Monnet in brief • Focus on EU studies to promote excellence in teaching and research on the European integration process in various disciplines • European Union studies comprise the study of Europe in its entiretywith particular emphasis on the European Integration process in both its internal and external aspects

Teaching and researchin the field of EU-studies Aims to support: MODULES 40h teaching programme (max grant: 30,000 €) CHAIRS* 90h teaching posts (max grant: 50,000 €) CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE** focal points of competence and knowledge (max grant 100,000 €) * And carry out at least one additional activity per academic year * * academic responsibility of Centres not mandatory any more to be assumed by Jean Monnet Chair holder Main activities: • teaching in European integration studies embodied in an official curriculum of a HEI • conduct, monitor and supervise research on EU subjects, also for other educational levels such as teacher training and compulsory education • organise and coordinate human and documentary resources related to European Union studies • enhancing the debate and exchange of experience about the EU (think-thank function) • systematic publication of the results of research activities

Jean Monnet Module Aims What is it? • Short teaching programme (or course) in the field of European Union studies in HEI • Modules with minimum duration of 40 teaching hours per academic year • Teaching hours must include direct contact hours in group lectures, seminars, tutorials • Modules to be focussed on a discipline in European studies or multidisciplinary • Enhance research and provide first teaching experience for young researchers, practitioners and scholars in EU issues • Foster publication and dissemination of the results of academic research • Create interest in the EU Eligibility criteria Activities • HEI established in any country of the world • HEIs in Programme Countries must hold a valid ECHE. • An ECHE is not required for participation HEIs in Partner Countries. • Project duration of 3 years • General or introductory courses on European Union issues • Specialised teaching on European Union developments • Summer and intensive courses that are fully recognised

  29. Jean Monnet Chair What is it? Additional activities • A teaching post with a specialisation in European Union studies for university professors • To be hold by only one professor, who must provide the minimum of 90 teaching hours per academic year • Teaching must include direct contact hours in group lectures, seminars, tutorials and may include distance learning but no individual supervision. • Provide teaching/lectures to students from other departments • Advise and mentor the young generation of teachers and researchers in EU Studies subject areas • Conduct, monitor and supervise research on EU subjects, for other educational levels • Organise conferences, seminars/webinars, workshops, etc. targeting to policy makers at local, regional and national level as well as to civil society Activities Eligibility criteria • Minimum of 90 hours teaching per academic year • Deepen teaching in EU studies embodied in an official curriculum of a HEI • Provide in-depth teaching on EU matters for future professionals in fields with are in increasing demand on the labour market • HEI established in any country of the world • HEIs in Programme Countries must hold a valid ECHE • Applicants must be staff members in their HEI and have the rank of professors. No visiting professor can apply!

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Activities • Develop a strategic 3-year annual plan with a wide range of activities • Lead research activities in specific EU subjects • Develop update and complement the current courses and curricula on EU studies • Enhance debate about the EU, where possible in partnership with local stakeholders and/or EU Representations in MS and EU Delegations • Systematic publication of the results of research activities What is it? • A focal point of competence and knowledge on EU subjects within a given HEIs • It gathers expertise and competences of high-level experts (including JM Chairs /Module coordinators) to develop synergies between disciplines in EU studies, create joint transnational activities and links with HEIs in other countries • They must reach out to students from faculties not normally dealing with EU issues as well as to policy makers, civil servants, organised civil society and general public Eligibility criteria • HEI established in any country of the world • HEIs in Programme Countries must hold a valid ECHE. • ECHE not required for participation HEIs in Partner Countries. • Only one Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence can be supported in any given HEI • Project duration of 3 years

  31. Policy debate and exchanges Aims to support: NETWORKS: foster creation, development of consortia of international players (HEIs, Centres of Excellence, departments, etc.) in area of EU studies. Involvement of minimum 3 partner institutions from 3 different countries, duration up to 3 years; (max grant:300.000 €) PROJECTS:support innovation, cross-fertilisation, the spread of the EU content. Involvement of other partners possible, duration between 12 – 24 months; (max grant:60.000 €) Main activities: • Gathering and promoting information and results on methodologies applied to high-level research and teaching on EU-studies • Enhancing cooperation between different HEIs and other relevant bodies throughout Europe and around the world • Innovation projects explore new angles and different methodologies in view of making EU subjects more attractive, adopted to various kinds of target populations • Cross-fertilisation projects promote discussion and reflection on EU issues, enhance knowledge about the Union and its processes • Spread content projects mainly concern information and dissemination activities

Jean Monnet Network Activities • Gather and promote information and results on high level research and teaching on EU studies • Enhance cooperation between different universities throughout Europe and around the world • Foster cooperation and create a high knowledge exchange platform with public actors and the Commission services on highly relevant EU subjects. Whatisit? • To foster the creation and development of consortia of international players (HEIs, Centres of Excellence, departments, teams, individual experts, etc.) in the area of EU studies • To gather information, exchange practices, build knowledge and promote the European integration process across the world • To enhance existing networks supporting specific activities, fostering the participation of young researchers in EU themes • Unilateral proposals, focusing on activities that cannot be achieved successfully at national level. Their aim is to undertake projects that have a multinational rather than a national dimension. Eligibilitycriteria • HEI established in any country of the world • HEIs in Programme Countries must hold a valid ECHE. • The applicant is the coordinator of the network comprising 3 participating institutions min. from 3 different countries • The designated European institutions pursuing an aim of European interest are not eligible to apply • Project duration of 3 years

Jean Monnet Projects Activities Whatisit? • Develop and test new methodologies, content and tools on specific EU topics • Create virtual classrooms an specific subject areas and test them in different countries • Design, produce and implement self-training tools promoting active citizenship in the EU • Develop and deliver appropriate pedagogical content of EU issues at the level of primary and secondary education (Learning EU at School) • Support information and dissemination activities for staff of the public administration, for experts in specific subjects and for civil society • They support innovation, cross-fertilisation and the spread of EU content • Based on unilateral proposals but may involve other partners Eligibilitycriteria • HEI established in any country of the world • ECHE for HEIs in Programme Countries • The designated European institutions pursuing an aim of European interest are not eligible to apply • Primary and secondary education establishments not eligible to apply, although they may actively contribute to the activities • Duration : 12 to 24 months

Support to Associations Aims to support: ASSOCIATIONS:contribute to the study of the EU integration process, interdisciplinary approach, officially registered and independent; open to all interested professors, teachers and researchers specialising in EU issues, at regional, national or supranational level; duration 3 years; (max grant: 50.000€) Main activities: • organise and carry out statutory activities of associations dealing with EU studies and EU issues; • Perform research in the field of specific European issues in order to advice local, regional, national and European policy makers, dissemination of outcomes including the EU institutions, enhancing active citizenship.

Support to Associations Activities • Organise and carry out statutory activities of associations dealing with European Union studies and European Union issues (e.g. publication of a newsletter, the setting up of a dedicated website, etc.) • Perform research in the field of specific European issues to advise local, regional, national and European policy makers and disseminate the outcomes among the institutions involved, including the EU Institutions as well as a wider public thus enhancing active citizenship Whatisit? • Support to associations having as explicit purpose to contribute to the study of the European integration process • They must be interdisciplinary and open to all interested professors, teachers and researchers specialised on EU issues • They should be representative of the academic community in EU studies at regional, national or supranational level • Support will be given only to associations that are officially registered and have independent legal status. Eligibilitycriteria • Any association of professors and researchers specialising in EU Studies, established in any country of the world • The explicit purpose of the association must be to contribute to the study of the European integration process at national or transnational level. • 3 years
