  3. TEN WAYS TO WASH CORPORATE STINK OFF YOUR COOL BRAND

  4. WRITE FROM THE HEART. Instead of producing content for content’s sake, write genuinely about what you do or sell. Write your own stories. Don’t worry about “seeming” sincere when you actually are sincere. 1

  5. CUT THE JARGON. No matter what level of audience you’re writing to, cut out the industry jargon and buzzwords. There’s always a simpler way to say what you want to say. 2

  6. SHOW OFF YOUR TEAM. Your brand isn’t cold and heartless. Your brand is composed of some great people, so show these people off! Give them a chance to show who they are. 3

  7. REACH OUT TO INDIVIDUALS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Instead of distributing messages to an audience, send targeted messages to engage with individuals. Build trust and establish a real persona for your brand. 4

  8. CRACK SOME JOKES. Humor shows that you don’t take yourself too seriously. Humor gives people a reason to bond with your brand. Humor makes you human. 5

  9. USE REAL VIDEOS AND PHOTOS. Don’t stuff your campaign full of stock images and charts. Use real photos and videos of you and your team. Real stuff will make your brand seem more personal. 6

  10. ENGAGE IN CONVERSATIONS. Remember the “social” part of social media. Participate actively in ongoing conversations. It proves your brand is human. 7

  11. LET YOUR PEOPLE BE THEMSELVES. Let your employees identify themselves as part of your company on their personal social media profiles. Allow them to post content as they see fit. You will reach more people, and you will look more personal. 8

  12. ADMIT FAULT WHEN APPROPRIATE. Your brand isn’t perfect. If you try to pretend that it is, people will notice and will resent you for it. Admit fault. It will earn you sympathy, and show you are not a robot. 9

  13. STOP MARKETING SO HARD. When you’re actively trying to sell a product, you naturally sound more artificial. Instead, trust your instincts and write what comes naturally. 10
