Magna Carta “Great Charter” a document guaranteeing basic political rights in England, drawn up by nobles and approved by King John in AD 1215.
Divine Right • The idea that monarchs are God’s representatives on earth and are therefore answerable only to God.
Absolute Monarchy • A king or queen who has unlimited power and seeks to control all aspects of society.
English Bill of Rights Accepted by William and Mary from Parliament. Limited the power of the monarchy and protected free speech in parliament.
English Petition of Rights A landmark in constitutional history. Limited royal power and went against the theories of absolute monarchy.
Habeas Corpus A document requiring that a prisoner be brought before a court or judge so that it can be decided whether his or her imprisonment is legal.
constitutional monarchy A monarchy in which the ruler’s power is limited by law.
Restoration • The period of Charles II’s rule over England, after the collapse of Oliver Cromwell’s government.
