  1. CCS: The RealWorld Application APPA Dec 6, 2007 How soon? How much? At what cost?

  2. Baseload Alternatives w/o CCS PC-Coal: ~1800-1900 lb CO2e/MWh IGCC-Coal: ~1900-2000 Domestic NGCC: ~900-950 PC-Coal(50%): ~900-950 Imported LNG CC: ~1000-1300

  3. Baseload Alternativesw/90% Capture PC-Coal: ~340-420 lbs CO2e/MWh IGCC-Coal: ~300-390 Domestic NGCC: ~220-250 Imported LNG CC: ~340-680 SNG CC-Coal: ~460-620

  4. The Current Economics of IGCC w/ CO2 CCS[NETL 2007] Gross Power: ~ 700 MWe Net Power:~ 530 MWe CO2 Aux Power:~ 60 MWe (35% of Aux) ~30 Mwe for Compression CO2 Transport, Storage and Monitor: ~ 0.4 cents/kWh (4%)

  5. Current CO2 EOR Activity Injection: Equivalent Plants • 10-500 MWe from natural sources • 3-500 MWe from industrial sources 82 CO2 EOR projects (47 M tpy, 2,200 Mcfd) Producing 237,000 barrels per day

  6. Pipeline Economics • 3000 miles of dedicated CO2 pipelines • 200,000 miles of NG pipelines • Longest: 500 miles (Permian Basin) • Capital cost: $40,000 / mile / inch of pipeline diameter • Example: 10M tons/yr (3-500 MWe plants) requires 26” diameter pipe. Cost: $1.2 M / mile. • FutureGen sites: maximum 60 miles

  7. Implications for Modeling • CCS may be commercially deployable by 2020 in some EOR regions • EPRI: 2022+ • EIA: 2025+ • All regions do not have the same access to characterized geologic formations • All regions do not have the same access to existing CO2 infrastructure • Regional capacities for CO2 storage need to be part of the model

  8. All regions do not have the same access to geologic formations DoE program will provide updated Atlas data by 2009 FutureGen sites provide a usable inventory EOR and coalbed methane sites are candidates for early deployment

  9. All regions do not have the same access to existing CO2 infrastructure Existing CO2 EOR infrastructure limited CO-NM-TX Permian Basin MS-LA WY-CO ND-Canada More pipeline capacity will be built with access to more CO2 NG pipeline infrastructure is the next best alternative(200,000 mi.)
