  1. Garden Project 2013 and Developing Our Farmers Market

  2. July 3oth – First Day Back Harvest • While working in the garden, friends found many crops that were ready to be harvested. • Friends picked corn, tomatoes, green and red bell peppers, and beans.

  3. Using Our Senses to Explore: what does it feel like? What does it smell like? What does it taste like? Left: Friends felt our corn to see if it was safe to eat. Miss Lindsay asked: “Do we think we can eat it?” Friends said: “Maybe” Amal“No because there’s green stuff and wrinkly. It’s not fully grown” – Naajy “No because it looks all wrinkly” – Taylor “No it’s wrinkle. The whole thing” – Jayce Top: Friends smelt and tasted our green bell pepper. Miss Lindsay asked, “ What do you think it’ll taste like?” Friends replied: “Hot” Kaden“I’ve had red and yellow bell peppers – kind of sweet, kind of hot” – Taylor “Hot because all the sesame seeds in there. Green peppers are hot” – Naajy “Spicy, healthy. Smells healthy” – Mikayla“Tastes sweet. Tastes like red one, the same one.” Amal“Spicy and good for you. And healthy.” Hanifah “Fresh.” Jayce “There’s water inside. Tasty is good.”

  4. Continued: Using Our Senses To Investigate Friends got to taste test another pepper ! This time, it was red. Would this be any different than our green bell pepper?? Miss Lindsay asked “What do you think this one will taste like?” Friends replied: “Hot” Kaden “Hot, spicy and healthy.” Jayce “It doesn’t smell the same. Hot spicy and healthy. Gives us muscles” – Naajy “Tastes like Chiptole chicken at Chili’s.” – Mikayla “It’s gonna be sweet but a lot of water like a watermelon.” Amal “Smells bad.” Hanifah“Blah” Jayce “It’s going to be good.” Isabella M.

  5. We’re Fans of Tomatoes!!

  6. Giant Sunflower! • Did you know that a sunflower will always face itself towards the sun? • I wonder if our sunflower will produce sunflower seeds that we can eat? • How do you think the sunflower got there? We didn’t plan this beautiful addition! What do you think happened?

  7. Early Morning Garden Harvest! Aug 2nd! Our morning class took a visit to the classroom garden for another crop harvest. Friends found more vegetables! Friends practiced their team work, cooperation, and nurturing hands when working in our garden!

  8. We Found More Ripe Tomatoes!

  9. We Spotted Our Watermelon!!

  10. We Have MORE Watermelons Growing!! Friends were very excited to pick our large watermelon, but while moving about in our garden we spotted more watermelons growing! We talked about waiting until they were bigger before picking them! We will keep an eye on them – critters just love our tasty watermelons!

  11. We have loved seeing our hard work pay off in the garden this week! Friends spotted a new addition to the garden. This friend tells Miss Lindsay, “It’s 62 degrees outside”. Our overall collection of veggies after harvesting! Friends pick ripe beans off our tire planters.

  12. Farmers Market – Comes to Life! Friends worked together to form plans for our farmers market – sharing their ideas at group time and drawing out their plans during activity time. Miss Lindsay collected all their suggestions, provided materials that we had and they went to designing our EDLC Farmers Market on Aug. 5th.

  13. At Group Time… During our group gathering time, we shared ideas about what we should charge customers for our garden fresh produce. Miss Lindsay gathered four different price suggestions per vegetable/fruit which we then made a final decision during activity time. During activity time, friends took on different jobs. Some friends helped make our labels and prices, others helped decorate our grocery bags, some friends helped sort our harvested crops by type and others helped set up the farmers market at the front of the classroom. When we were all finished – our Farmers Market was open for business! Now to each work a specific job!

  14. What We’re Selling at the EDLC Farmers Market: Cherry Tomatoes6 for $1 Fresh Eggs – Miss Lindsay donated eggs from her hens!$3 a dozen We sold out!

  15. We Have Customers!!! EDLC Parents/Families Bought Fresh Produce at Pick Up Time! We practiced our best customer service and made over $15 on our first day! Thank you EDLC customers for helping fund our winter crops! See you next time!
