  1. Sophocles Vs. Euripides By Laura and Emmy

  2. Our documentary • This documentary will compare the lives of Sophocles and Euripides. We will compare their achievements and two of their most famous plays, Medea and Oedipus Rex.

  3. The way the movie will work • We will show the lives of Sophocles and Euripides, comparing and contrasting the two play wrights lifestyles. We will then compare and contrast two of their most famous plays. We will then relate how the plays and their lives are connected.

  4. Sophocles • Sophocles was the second great writer of Greek tragedy. Most of his plays dealt with a person and his fate. He developed the concept of a tragic hero. He was often said to be an idealist, writing about Men as they should be, not the way they really are.

  5. Euripides • He was the third great writer of Greek tragedies. He used his play to criticize religious, political and social ideals. He was not very popular in his lifetime, for his plays were controversial. He was said to show men the way they really were.

  7. Oedipus Rex By Sophocles • Oedipus Rex is about a tragic hero named Oedipus who is cursed with a terrible fate. In trying to discover his past, he learns many terrible secrets, but becomes more noble because of it.

  8. Medea By Euripides Medea is left by her husband, Jason, in favor of the princess of Corinth. Medea insists on revenge. She poisons the golden robe, a treasure of the royal family, for she believes that the princess will wear it to her wedding. The princess puts it on before the wedding and the poison kills her and her father who tried to save her. Medea then stabs her sons, not because she wants too, but because she believes that is the best way to hurt Jason. She then escapes, bringing the bodies of her children with her so that Jason will not have them.

  9. Oedipus Rex vs. Medea They both today are considered very famous plays even still today, and they both show characteristics of a tragic downfall of a hero. Both people exile themselves from the palaces and they both have a sad ending.

  10. How did this affect Greek society? This subject fits into the sweep of Greek society because theatre was a big art of their lives. They had festivals to celebrate Dionysus in which many plays were performed. This also shows what was socially accepted: Sophocles, who idealized men, was far more popular then Euripides, who showed men as they really were: flawed and horrible and not perfect. Sophocles was the big budget movie of his time; Euripides the disturbing little indie film.

  11. Why this matters This is where theatre was born. The theatre in ancient Greece was a very big deal and it still is today. (They invented that little mask that has the happy face and the sad face.) This movie would be targeted to people who love theatre and drama and would like to know more of the history of it.
