  1. 5th Grade EDUPRIZE 2012-2013

  2. Harcourt TrophiesReading/Language Arts • Includes: shared literature, guided comprehension, vocabulary, independent reading, grammar, and spelling • Multi-level materials • Extra support

Math • We use HM Math program in 5th (and now 4th grade). • Focuses on logic and problem-solving, applying math concepts, • Aligned with Common Core Standards. • 10-15 minutes to start Math homework in class, but your child • SHOULD have math to do at HOME each night as well • Homework sheet/IXL/Fact practice). • All homework • extension of what we did in class that day. We go over our homework at the start of each math class; so it is very important that your student does their homework each night. • Students are strongly encouraged to check their work. Thank you for your support at home.

  4. Geography Packets done each week Cover map skills that will benefit the students across all content areas. Done in class and turned in on Friday. Graded on Friday and given back. Students have the opportunity to fix any mistakes and return the packet on MONDAY for full credit. Though your student’s teacher may encourage them to fix them every week it is the STUDENT’S responsibility to correct and return them on time.

  6. Special Rotation Each specialist has your child for 5 days Specials will be announced in Newsletters or in homework folders Please help your child wear appropriate shoes and clothing for P.E.

  7. Agendas will: • Improve your child’s organization • Assist with homework information • Develop responsibility • Teach your child to use resources that are available

  8. Agenda *Each student will use an agenda daily. * Homework / Unfinished work will be higlighted *Parents may be asked to view and sign the agenda nightly. *Agendas need to be in school everyday. *Replacement agendas are $6

  9. HOMEWORK You should expect that your child will have homework every night. Please check their planners regularly. Students should also be reading every day. (Between 30-60 minutes)

  10. Report Cards • Report cards will be sent home at the end of each quarter. • We will use A, B, C,D,F grades. • Not all subjects will be graded weekly • Specialists send their own report attached to the report card at the end of the grading period.

  11. JUPITER GRADES • As the 5th and 6th grade team, we use an online, electronic grading system. • Check on your child’s progress as frequently as would like.

  12. Snack • All TOPS students should bring a snack each day. It is important that we aren’t hungry while we’re working. • Please DO NOT send anything but water in water bottles. • ALLERGY ALERT - No peanuts or peanut products, Please • Food should be dry- Thank you for sending in food that does not need to be eaten with a spoon.

  13. ATTENDANCE • Attendance is VERY IMPORTANT for all students. • Being on time for school will assist your child in developing good work habits • Students need to be at school 5 minutes before their start time • AM TOPS – Quiet Start • It is their job!

  15. Read to Succeed • We hope all students will read at LEAST 100 hours during the school year. • Hours are recorded and turned in MONTHLY • Late calendars will not be accepted. Final deadline is April 30th. • There will be special activities at the end of the year to celebrate your readers.

  16. Read to Succeed Examples of activities: • Water Day • Bowling • Lunch with the principal • Breakfast • Gift Certificates to a Book Store • T-Shirts • Parents, we’re always looking for new ideas and company donations!

  17. Wax Museum Students will: • Write a comprehensive report on an assigned individual related to their cottage or specific area designated by the teacher. The report is part of our writing program and a state standard requirement. • Prepare a poster • Dress in costume • Participate in the evening museum event at the end of the third quarter

  19. PROJECT EXPLORATION • Friday-Sunday – Feb. 15-17 • President's Day Weekend • Applications are required and teacher approval is a must. Students with the following qualities throughout the school year will be selected to participate in this exciting Project Exploration adventure. MEETING DETAILS COMING SOON

Qualities • Outstanding Citizenship in classrooms and on school grounds • Positive attitude towards teachers and classmates • Demonstrates quality listening skills and the ability to follow directions the first time • Shows responsibility by being in school on time • Displays an appropriate sense of maturity

  21. As Your Child Matures Your children are maturing, and it is very much appreciated if you introduce and encourage: • Daily Showers • Teeth Brushing/Mints • Use of soap • Deodorant

  22. Volunteers • You are SO IMPORTANT to the success of our program • We could not do it without you! • If for some reason you need to cancel for a day, Please call your child’s teacher and leave a message.
