  4. Matisse’s later years • After being diagnosed with cancer, Matisse had surgery, which led to his use of a wheelchair. • He switched from painting and sculpting to working with paper cut-outs.

  5. “Painting with Scissors” • A new lease on life led to an extraordinary burst of expression, which made it possible for him to create what he had always struggled for.

  6. How does Matisse use shape? • Look at the following works of art by Henri Matisse and identify the types of shape he uses. • You should be able to easily recognize work by Matisse due to his unique use of shape.

  7. Matisse Cut-Out Collage • Your next project is to create a collage using shape, just as Matisse did. • You will “paint with scissors” to show an understanding of Matisse-inspired shapes.

  8. Show an understanding of both SHAPE and MATISSE! • Think about the shapes you saw • Create your own collage using Matisse inspired shape and color. • Challenge yourself with complicated shapes.
