  1. Pediatric Dental Treatment

  2. Root Canal treatment in children Root canal treatment means removal of the infected soft tissue [pulp] from inside a tooth, cleaning and disinfecting and filling it with a filling material from the root tip to the crown of a tooth. The procedure is absolutely safe in children. Retaining a milk tooth till its normal age of exfoliation is important for the proper growth and development of the underlying permanent tooth and is also quite essential for maintaining the space for the erupting larger permanent tooth. Early removal/ loss/ extraction of a milk tooth can cause shrinkage of space between teeth, resulting in malalignment of its permanent successor. Hence it is important to retain all the milk teeth till the age of their natural exfoliation. That is why a dentist recommends root canal treatment in a milk tooth and advises removal only when it cannot be saved. The basic difference between the root canal treatment in a milk tooth and a permanent tooth is that the filling material in a permanent tooth is permanent while the one in a milk tooth is resorbable.

  3. Space Maintainer In case a milk tooth has to be extracted early’ a dentist may advice to place a space maintainer to prevent the migration of adjacent teeth.

  4. Crown over a root canal treated tooth in children Root Canal Treatment helps to remove infected sof tissue [pulp] from inside a tooth, besides cleaning, disinfecting and filling it with an inert filling material. The soft tissues contain blood vessels and nerves, which help to give nourishment to the teeth. After its removal, the tooth tends to become non-vital and may become more brittle, as there is no more nourishment and blood flow within the teeth. Therefore, a root canal treated tooth is prone to fracture, especially when biting/ chewing hard food. Hence it is necessary to place a crown over a root canal treated tooth.

  5. Fissure Sealants Fissure sealants are plastic coatings that are painted on to the grooves of the back teeth. The sealant forms a protective layer that keeps food and bacteria from getting stuck in the tiny grooves in the teeth and causing decay. The process is usually quick and easy taking only a few minutes per tooth. How long does fissure sealant last? Sealant usually last for many years, but needs to be checked regularly to make sure that the seal is intact. It can wear over time, and sometimes needs to be added to or replaced to be sure that no decay can start underneath it.

  6. Fluoride Application in childrens Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay by making the tooth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth. It also reverses early decay. Fluoride varnish is a dental treatment that can help prevent tooth decay, slow it down, or stop it from getting worse. Fluoride varnish is made with fluoride, a mineral that can strengthen tooth enamel (outer coating on teeth). Keep in mind that fluoride varnish treatments cannot completely prevent cavities. Fluoride varnish treatments can best help prevent decay when a child is also brushing using the right amount of toothpaste with fluoride, flossing regularly, getting regular dental care, and eating a healthy diet.

  7. Habit Breaking Appliances Habits that are not desirable are Thumb Sucking, Tongue Thrusting, Lip Biting, Nail Biting, mouth breathing and Finger Biting to name a few. Habit breaking appliances are made by dentists to break the habits especially in children. If these habits are allowed to continue, they can result in Gum disease, change in position of the teeth and change in position of the jaws. Usually children will develop unhealthy habits. These habits usually fade away as they grow up, if the practice persists after the permanent teeth have erupted, it can drastically change the growth patterns of the jaw and can ruin the alignment of the teeth Children have a very soft bone in their jaw, so if they catch such habits it can make the soft jaws change its shape according to the force being applied on it. So it’s very important to stop these habits by making the child understand the consequences of continuing such habits. But for some kids they need some appliance to break the habit. What are the available appliances ? We study the habit of child and we make a treatment plan. Here are the basic treatment option for some of the common oral habits.

  8. THUMB SUCKING:- If your child has a thumb or finger sucking habit that has persisted past the age of five, and you have been unable to tame it, a more permanent solution to thumb sucking is an appliance called a fixed palatal crib or a rake-style appliance. Appliance:-

  9. TONGUE THRUSTING:- It's the natural swallowing movement of tongue, but some kids take it as a habit to repeat this movement which will result in the deformity of the arch. If the pattern doesn’t change, however, it can lead to problems similar to those caused by thumb sucking like problems with tooth alignment and skeletal development.

  10. This is treated with a tongue thrusting habit breaking appliance. This can be either in the form of the crib, rake, spiky style or beaded.

  11. MOUTH BREATHING:- Normally breathing is through nose, mouth breathing can lead to decrease in saliva and it makes teeth more prone for caries. One can probably assume that there may be some kind of psychological disturbance in the child’s mind. This must be identified and rectified at an earlier stage whenever possible. Some habits develop due to anatomical deviation. As blocked nose due to recurrent cold or deviated septum can force the child from mouth and thus the habit of mouth breathing develops. Appliance used for treating this is an oral screen. The oral screen prevents the inhaled air to enter the oral cavity. The oral cavity can also be closed.

  12. Emotional cause also leads to bad oral habit, pedodontist will help you find right cause and etiology and help you with best suitable appliance Treating the oral habit at an early age is the most effective way to prevent further dental health problems. Minimum time for a habit to break is 4 months. If you take the treatments for granted it can cost you not only money but also your child’s permanent teeth.

  13. Perio Scaling And Polishing Though it is very routine day to day procedure in our clinic but it is a very important procedure to be done for our patient who agree with belief that “prevention is better than cure”. Why you Need to clean teeth daily? Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that continuously forms in your mouth ,covers the surfaces of your teeth. Plaque forms naturally in your mouth but is very harmful to your dental and gum health we recommend regular brushing and flossing of teeth to remove this plaque layer. Because If plaque is not removed from your teeth and around the gums, after 48 hrs it eventually hardens into tartar which can cause a variety of problems in your mouth including cavities and gum infections. Tarter or say calculus can not be removed by brushing or flossing it require special dental tools and procedures. If tartar exists below the gum line, a deep cleaning known as scaling and root planing also called oral prophylaxis becomes necessary.

  14. Curettage In cases of long standing gum infection, the tissues inside the gum absorb bacterial toxins and become diseased. In these cases, following anaesthesia, the diseased gums are scraped away from the inside, thus restoring the health of the gums.

  15. Flap surgery/ Gum Surgery Your teeth are at risk because of periodontal disease. It began with the build-up of plaque and tartar on your teeth, which may have resulted from insufficient brushing and flossing. Over time, the plaque and tartar have caused loss of the supporting tissue around some of your teeth. When plaque builds up on a tooth, bacteria in the plaque attach the bone around the tooth as well as the fibres, which connect the tooth to the bone. As fibres and bone are destroyed, a pocket or space forms between the gum and the tooth-an ideal site for more plaque to build up without proper hygiene, the process may continue, sometimes without symptoms, until the tooth is endangered. Why do you need periodontal gum surgery? This surgical procedure is used by the periodontist to smooth/correct defects and irregularities in the bone surrounding the diseased teeth with the ultimate goal of eliminating periodontal pockets. The recent advances in surgery Periodontal surgery has evolved with newer techniques and materials advancing the art and science of dentistry. REGENERATION is a present concept where the tissues that are lost due to periodontal disease are reconstructed to a certain extent using newer and advanced technique.

  16. Various methods of regeneration are: 1] Bone Grafts 2] Guided tissue regeneration. Is flap surgery a permanent cure? You may be prone to periodontal diseases that require constant and careful attention. Like other chronic diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and asthma, there is no permanent cure. Periodontal surgery helps to control disease and prevents further destruction to the gums and bone, thereby minimizing tooth loss. Regular check-ups would ensure tooth loss is further minimized.

  17. Bone Grafts When plaque and calculus are not removed the bacteria in the plaque toxins that can destroy the supporting tissues and bone around the tooth becomes loose and separates away from the tooth resulting in deep areas called pockets. As these pockets deepen, more gum tissue and bone are destroyed forming deep bone defects. Bone grafts are bone substitutes [powder/gels/sponges]etc. which are placed in the diseased areas to enhance new bone formation with application of regenerated techniques.

  18. Gingival Recession Gingival recession, also known as receding gums, is the exposure in the roots of the teeth caused by a loss of gum tissue and/or retraction of the gingival margin from the crown of the teeth. ... It may exist with or without concomitant decrease in crown-to-root ratio (recession of alveolar bone). Causes 1] Poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease contribute to a gingival recession. 2] Physical wear of the gums by vigorous tooth brushing or the use of hard bristles is a further, common cause of receding gums. Over- brushing causes receding gums even when dental hygiene might otherwise be good. What is the treatment for gingival recession? Open flap scaling and root planing: During this procedure, the dentist or periodontist (gum doctor) folds back the affected gum tissue, removes the harmful bacteria from the pockets, and then snugly secures the gum tissue in place over the tooth root, thus eliminating the pockets or reducing their size.
