  3. Buoyancy - upward force exerted by a liquid or a gas Example 1: water pushes up on a boat Example 2: air pushesup on the puck in air hockey

  4. Gravity - attractive force between all objects in the universe Example 1: the Earth pulls ALL objects toward it Misconception: Some people think that the ONLY force of gravity is the Earth pulling things down! A QUESTION FOR YOU: Which exerts more force – the toaster or the Earth? Example 2: all objects pull the Earth towards them as well! Answer:The Earth exerts more force. More mass means more gravity.

  5. Elastic Force - a force that pulls elastic or springy objects back to the original shape Example: A rubber band returns to its original shape when released

  6. Atomic Force An attractive force that holds atoms together. It holds ALL MATTER together Example: It holds together the atoms in a cup, a leaf, a water drop, etc.

  7. Magnetic Force A force of attraction(pulling together) orrepulsion(pushing away) by a magnet. Example: Opposite poles attract. Same poles repel.

Friction HEAT! • Example: • the snow and skis are touching • so friction SLOWS DOWN the skier • friction also melts the snow a little Misconception: Some people think that friction only occurs between solids – this IS NOT TRUE! (air friction video) A force between two touching objects that opposes (goes against) the motion. Friction MAKES HEAT!

  10. Lots of friction or very little friction? COVERED WITH A LUBRICANT GREASY OILY WAXY lubricant: any substance that reduces friction (oil, grease, wax, etc)

Electric Force A force exerted by electric current or static electricity Example: The static electricity causes the hairs to repel each other THE RULE TO KNOW: Opposite charges attract A QUESTION FOR YOU: Do her hairs all have the same charge or different charges? Answer: they are repelling, so they must all be the same
