  2. You Rule! • That’s right, you rule the world you create inside your frame • Not only that, you are an expert • Want to bet?

  3. . . . but first Let’s look at a couple of story telling examples • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp9FRMybuEs • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_-laToBczk

  4. Today’s Agenda • Shot composition & shot selection • Lighting basics • Audio basics

  5. Four Simple Tips • Know Your Equipment • Play w/ it before you really need it • OK, that’s not about shot composition, but it’s really important • Brace Your Camera • Use a tripod, seriously • Use shot variety to tell your story • Use the “Rule” of Thirds • Tic-Tac-Toe

  6. Brace Your Camera • This is as close as we’ll get to a law • Use a tripod, table, car hood, bean bag • If you must handhold • use wide zoom setting • cradle your camera • brace your body • twist into your shot

  7. Shot Selection Use a succession of shots to tell your story • Three basic shot types • Wide Shot • Use to establish the scene • Medium Shot • Use to establish relationships & show location • Close-up • Use to show detail and to show emotion • Three shot “angles” • High, Neutral, Low • Each has impact on your viewer

  9. Rule of Thirds examples Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

  10. Lighting Basics • First, you must have enough light to have an acceptable image • Lighting should be consistent • Lighting should complement your theme and (generally) be realistic • Watch out for back lighting

  11. Basic Audio Concepts(Audio is important) • Microphones are not capable of selective hearing, unlike humans • Mics operate by proximity • That is, the closer the better • Environmental factors play a major role in the quality of your recording • The mall food court is likely to be an “unfriendly” environment for recording

  12. Let’s Talk Editing • Windows Live MovieMaker; free, but must be downloaded from Microsoft • Every Mac has iMovie; also free • Commercial editing apps available for both platforms
