He did this for about year, and then worked for the movie magazine Cinémonde, (which doesn't exist anymore). After about a year he left that job and started to look for a job in a photo store, like the one he had in Le Havre. “But nobody gave me a job, so it was my lucky day!” Finally, he got a job working in a modeling school shooting portfolios for the girls there. After that, he went on to assist a photographer for a couple of months. The first break was to work for Elle magazine in Paris, then Marie Claire. Then Demarchelier worked a lot in Italy and Germany for 12 years. “My big break came when Alexander Liberman called me to work for American Vogue and then British Vogue.” • In 1975, Demarchelier moved to New York, where he established himself a reputation in fashion and portrait photography. He actually got into it via freelancing and learning and working with all sorts of photographers, one specifically inspired him though and that was Henri Cartier-Bresson. In 1992, he actually shot for Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar and from that time on, he has been doing advertising campaigns for all sorts of fashion labels. His client list includes names such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Versace, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Armani, or Janet Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Hillary Clinton.
What was it like to photograph Princess Diana?“To photograph her was a great honor. She called to ask for me when I was working at British Vogue. I was surprised at the time, because they always used British photographers to take royal portraits. It was the first time they used a foreigner. I liked the idea of breaking protocol. The first time I shot her, I went to the countryside. She had long hair and kind of awful makeup. So the second time she called me, I offered to bring hair and makeup, and she said yes. I went with the hairdresser Sam McKnight and the makeup artist Mary Greenwell, and we gave her a more modern look. We cut her hair and changed her makeup.” -Patrick Demarchelier Princess Diana. London 1990 Keith Richards 2001 Is there somebody you haven't yet photographed whom you've always dreamed of photographing?“I love the Dalai Lama, I would like to take his portrait. I like his face and his spirit. He is interesting to me. Also Nelson Mandela I like a lot.” -Patrick Demarchelier

Patrick Demarchelier was Influenced by the classics of photography and painting. In his work you will notice that heplays with light, lines and forms of the human body, the fashion cloth or the wild elephant in the African landscape, always looking for beauty. "Beauty is everywhere", he says, "you only have to open your eyes". His photographs have been published and shown worldwide. His art prints are becoming collector's items. The secret of his success is "working hard", his life philosophy "to enjoy every moment of it".
Currently he shoots all different styles. He does Fine Art, which have a very raw feel to them. They are all black and white and as you can see, the models are nude, plain, and in there natural state. This makes them more real to the viewers. Some of his fine art can be staged like directional photography, in order to achieve the look he is after. He also does Beauty Shots, Advertising, and on his website you can see the contact sheets from some of his early work doing photo photoshoots.

Why I chose Patrick Demarchelier…… I chose this photographer because I really like the work he produces. I am drawn to his fashion work because he photographs the clothing in a way that you see a story. Patrick Demarchelier like to work in the most natural state and environment when shooting his photos. I really like that because models pose in front of the camera or tense up, but Demarchelier, knows how to make the model feel at ease and to have fun on set rather than think about each movement. He will almost work around his subjects in order to get the right shot. I find that like a little bit of fresh air, seeing many fashion photographers can be very ego built and forceful about the shoot. I love how Demarchelier can capture the subject right in the action of something. I noticed in his work he takes photos of the subject in movement rather than stand still. I think that is a challenge in its self, trying to snap the frame at the right point. But wow! Demarchelier can do it! I want to show you all about him because we see this type of photography everyday in magazines. Most people don’t really understand fashion photos they see. But there is more to the image than just the model and her high fashion clothes, it is the photographer behind the lens. They are the ones who make the image come alive with their creative minds.
