  1. Hyperinflation exam questions

  2. Source A is from a report by the Mayor of Berlin in 1923. Source A Many children, even the youngest, never get a drop of milk and come to school without a warm breakfast. The children frequently have no shirt or warm clothing. Terrible poverty gradually weakens any sense of cleanliness and leaves room only for thoughts of the struggle against hunger and cold. 1. Describe some of the problems faced by Germans during the period of hyperinflation in 1923. 3 marks 2002G

  3. Source B was written by Erna von Pustau about her time in Hamburg in the 1920s. Source B We were deceived too. We used to say, “All of Germany is suffering from hyperinflation”. It was not true-there is no game in the world where everyone loses; someone has to be the winner. The winners during inflation were big business men in the cities and landowners in the countryside. The great losers were the working class and the middle class who had most to lose. I remember going to the baker in the morning and buying two rolls for 20 marks. In the afternoon the same rolls were 25 marks. 2. How important was hyperinflation as a cause of discontent for Germans during the 1920s? 3 marks 2004G

  4. Source C shows an office worker with his wages in 1923. Source C 3. How useful is Source C as evidence of the problems of hyperinflation? 4 marks G
