NIST ROADMAP • Quotes from the latest NIST report, June 2009: • Everything already on the grid is legacy, and must be supported for years. • The most significant challenge of interoperability is, and will continue to be, interoperability with the installed legacy systems, while addressing interfaces between new and yet to be established devices, systems and domains constituting the Smart Grid. • Hence the necessity of an all-inclusive common platform • Globally, the same objectives apply (e.g., UTC request for harmonization with Canadian 1800 MHz allocation) B. Common Platform Proposal • CPP is an on-going effort, for developing a cohesive workable Common Platform Proposal • Goal is a sensible and sound standard for SUN • Legacy devices (minimal orphans) • Future evolution (data rates up through 400kbps) • Low energy devices (avoid energy inelegance) • Operation in different frequency bands worldwide • CPP sub group chaired by Clint Powell and Ben Rolfe was created at the suggestion of TG4g Chairman to help merge the various FSK/GFSK Proposals Atmel, ADI, Silver Spring Networks

Participation in CPP • IEEE-SA is an open, consensus driven standards organization, which encourages inclusion • Most parties have been actively participating in the CPP effort; most PHY parameters are well known and in use worldwide • CPP is an all-inclusive effort. Much work needs to be done. • We feel participation in the combined efforts of the CPP is vital to 802.15.4g so the global smart-grid initiatives can be supported in an efficient fashion Atmel, ADI, Silver Spring Networks

Rationale for CPP • Inclusive of all FSK and GFSK based proposals • Includes flexibility to deal with real-world • Based on working deployments from multiple vendors • Enables support for Legacy Devices • Support for Low Energy Devices • Support for Band Adaptation • Address goals of NIST roadmap and international needs • Flexible and extensible: Integration of legacy systems and growth for future needs • DSSS Compatibility • OFDM Compatibility Atmel, ADI, Silver Spring Networks

Conclusions • Drive toward multi-PHY amendment - The Tri-PHY • Proposal consistent with scope of approved SUN PAR • Support millions of users at low data rates • Robust and available • Low cost and ubiquitous • Operation in unlicensed spectrum • Support for both low-energy and line-powered devices • Support for operation in other available frequency bands. • Applications supported by this proposal are consistent with those proposed by utilities and manufacturers during PAR approval process and in tutorials Atmel, ADI, Silver Spring Networks
