Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness characterized by extreme mood changes, from elation to hopelessness. While the exact causes are often unclear, genetics can play a significant role, as the disorder frequently runs in families. Left untreated, bipolar disorder can lead to severe consequences, including suicide. It typically emerges in late teens or early adulthood, with half of all cases beginning before age 25. Though there is no cure, effective long-term treatment strategies exist to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
