Starting Activity • Fold your paper in half and draw a line down the center • Label one half with the year- 1900 • Label the other half with the year- 2000 • Your assignment • Draw what you think a farm look liked during both these time periods. • You have 7 minutes to draw your pictures • Stick animals and people are ok

  3. What are the differences you noted on both your farms? • 1900 • No tractors or other farm equipment • More work animals – horse drawn plow • Smaller farm sizes and buildings • 2000 • Use of tractors, combines, and other farm equipment • Larger farms

  4. What happened to cause these changes? • The horse drawn plow and the John Deere tractor serve the same purpose, but the John Deere tractor is the result in advances in technology. • The John Deere does the job faster and is more versatile. • These are the results of Mechanical Technology.

Technology in Agriculture has… • Made work easier for the farmer • What took days to plow with a horse drawn plow 100 years ago, now only takes a few hours • Increased productivity for the farmer • 100 years ago the average farmer could feed his family and another family of 4, today the average farmer produces enough food to feed 129 people. • Raised the standard of living for most humans • 100 years ago the average life span was 47 years old, today the average lifespan is 75 years old.
