  1. Character First AVAILABILITY

  2. Character is the inward motivation to do what is right in every situation even when no one is looking.

  3. AVAILABILITY Making my own schedule and priorities secondary to the wishes of those I serve.

  4. AVAILABILITY Availability is arranging your schedule and priorities in order to help others.

  5. AVAILABILITY Availability is the ability to add strength or worth to another person.

  6. AVAILABILITY Availability is the quality of one who stands ready to contribute his or her own strength and talent to those who need it.

  7. I Will: Put Others Ahead of Myself: “The measure of a man is not the number of his servants, but the number of people whom he serves.”

  8. I Will: Find a Way to Help, Not a Way to Hide: Look for ways that you can be of help to others in every situation.

  9. I Will: Be Ready When I’m Called: Be prepared for the unexpected. By being ready, you will not miss “Opportunity” when it knocks.

  10. I Will: Be Glad for the Chance to Serve: When you have the opportunity to help, remember to serve with a smile.

  11. I Will: Check With the Right Person Before I Make Commitments: Asking permission helps to protect you from making promises you cannot or should not keep.

  12. Five Keys to AVAILABILITY: Be Productive: Do not sit around waiting for something to happen. Develop Useful Skills: Improve your skills, and seize opportunities to learn new skills. Find a Way to Help: Adjust your plans when needs arise, and look for ways to help. Communicate With Others: Check with your authorities, your family members, and your schedule before volunteering. Serve Cheerfully: Displaying a bad attitude can cause more harm than not helping at all.

  13. AVAILABILITY The person who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones. -Anonymous

  14. AVAILABILITY Every fool knows you can't touch the stars, but it doesn't stop a wise man from trying. -Harry Anderson

  15. AVAILABILITY Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward. They may be beaten, but they may start a winning game. -Goethe

  16. AVAILABILITY Ask yourself: When have you changed plans in order to help someone? Who should you talk to before helping a friend after school? Why should you take advantage of learning opportunities?

  17. AVAILABILITY Example in Nature

  18. GIRAFFE Standing almost 20 feet tall, giraffes can see over a mile away. Their height and keen eyesight give them special ability to see needs. http://images.google.com/images?ndsp=20&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&client=safari&rls=en&q=picture%2Bof%2Ba%2Bherd%2Bof%2Bgiraffe&start=0&sa=N

  19. GIRAFFE Giraffes live in herds, which requires every member to look out for the interests and well-being of each other. http://images.google.com/images?ndsp=20&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&client=safari&rls=en&q=picture%2Bof%2Ba%2Bherd%2Bof%2Bgiraffe&start=0&sa=N

  20. GIRAFFE Giraffes take turns watching their young. No one seems to mind; it’s simply part of being available. http://images.google.com/images?ndsp=20&um=1&hl=en&safe=active&client=safari&rls=en&q=picture%2Bof%2Ba%2Bherd%2Bof%2Bgiraffe&start=0&sa=N

  25. When Cultivating The Character Of Availability Remember To: • Serve the needs of others instead of looking the other way. • Fulfill your basic responsibilities. • Watch for specific needs and find creative ways to meet them. • Consider the plans of others. • Finish what you start.
