Colonial Society

The Colonial period in America saw a rapid population increase from 250,000 in 1700 to 1.5 million by 1750. Factors such as cultural melting pots, social stratification, and evolving economic life shaped this dynamic era. With Scots-Irish as the largest non-English group, diverse professions flourished alongside the concentration of wealth among planters and merchants. The Great Awakening revitalized American religion, leading to new denominations and increased missionary work. This transformative time laid the groundwork for the American Revolution and the assertion of freedom of the press exemplified by John Peter Zenger.
