  2. Abstract • This presentation describes the use case for Dynamic Mobility Applications/Integrated Dynamic Transit Operations for Infrastructure Service Discovery Carl Kain, Noblis, Inc.

Introduction • There are approximately 30 Dynamic Mobility Applications (DMA) that are being developed for advanced Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). • Several of these applications are expected to incorporate IEEE 802.11 APs as a means of accessing the services being provided. • Travelers may be accessing the services by smart phone, tablet, laptop, or other portable device. • The following use case relates to the three Integrated Dynamic Transit Operations (IDTO) applications in an airport arrival scenario. Integrated Dynamic Transit Operations Applications • Connection Protection • This application allows a traveler making a trip with a transfer to request that the transit vehicle being transferred to be held to allow a connection to be made if the vehicle being transferred from is running late. The transfer may between buses, trains, subways, or private use vehicles. The transfer may be between vehicles owned and operated by different companies. A use case for Connection Protection is already in the ISD use case document. Carl Kain, Noblis, Inc.

Integrated Dynamic Transit Operations Applications • Dynamic Dispatching • This application allows a traveler to enter an origin, destination, location (this may be supplied by GPS/LBS function in the mobile device), and desired start time, and receive several alternative methods for reaching the destination. In addition to options such as scheduled fixed route transit (subway, bus or rail), the transit company may serve stations at designated locations according to the user’s request rather than by a fixed schedule. They may also provide an option that includes diverting busses from a fixed route to pick up passengers (flexible route). Carl Kain, Noblis, Inc.

Integrated Dynamic Transit Operations Applications • Dynamic Ridesharing • This application enable drivers and riders to dynamically identify and accept potential ridesharing opportunities along a given travel route. Depending on the implementation, drivers may be compensated by the riders, may receive discounted tolls, or be given free access to high occupancy vehicle lanes. Passengers will receive rides in privately owned vehicles that will take them directly to (or very near to) their destination. Carl Kain, Noblis, Inc.

Need for ISD • When fully developed, there are no specific programs to implement these three applications; implementation of any or all of these applications is expected to be at the discretion of the transit agencies or localities that will operate the services. • People that travel away from home will not know if these services are available at their destination. • Infrastructure Service Discovery can be a mechanism for travelers requesting trips to find out which services are available. Airport/Ground Transportation Scenario • The use case example applies to travelers arriving at a new destination by air. • The destination airport has WLAN service with internet access for airline passengers. • The arriving airline passengers need to arrange for transportation from the airport to their final destination. • Travelers will have IDTO smartphone app or access to mobile website that will take requests, offer multiple transportation options, or combinations of options to allow travelers to reach destination. • If travelers accept itinerary, connection protection can be requested. Variations to the Use Case • There are two variations to the use case • There is a server on the airport WLAN (local) that hosts the available IDTO services, or provides a portal to the services. • The services are available on the Internet, which can be accessed from the airport WLAN. Variation 1, Service Hosted on Internal Network Server • AP advertises the IDTO service availability. • Alternative to AP broadcasting service availability. • application (e.g. smartphone app) needed to request the service triggers query to AP, so the AP can respond to specific requests via ISD rather than broadcast the service availability. • Can be subset of ISD function for “Ground Transportation Services”. • IDTO options available from airport will be advertised. • Other modes such as rental car can be part of service advertisement • Travel requests are processed by the local server on the airport LAN.   11. Variation 2; Service Hosted on Internet • AP can advertise the IDTO services availability via internet access or application needed to request the service triggers query to AP, so the AP can respond rather than broadcast the service availability. • In this variation, information is available in pre-associated state. • Information concerning charges or fees for Internet access is also advertised so traveler can decide if it is worth paying for the Internet access, or whether there is an alternative method for requesting the service.
