  4. INFO. & Description • Family number 3 • Valence number 2 • State of matter: solid • It is a metal • silvery-white metal which develops a yellowish or pinkish color when in oxygen.

  5. History of Scadium • Scandium was discovered by Lars Frederick Nilson in 1876. He and his coworkers were actually looking for rare earth metals. By processing 10 kg of euxenite and other residues of rare-earth minerals, Nilson was able to prepare about 2 g of scandium oxide (scandia, Sc2O3) of high purity.

Uses and Impact • scandium and aluminum are used in some kinds of athletic equipment, such as aluminum baseball bats, bike frames and lacrosse sticks. • Believed that scandium-aluminum alloys will be important in the manufacture of fuel cells. • The emerging use of scandium and the environmental impact from scandium-containing waste is a rising environmental and health concern. • But thanks to science, scientists discovered a way to reduce the amount of waste it produces.
