  1. Career Episode 1 Line Follower Robot A)Introduction [CE 1.1] “Line Follower Robot” was the project which I did in a team for the Telecommunication Engineering degree fulfilment at Punjab Technical University, India. Project Title: Line Follower Robot Duration: [Date] – [Date] Location: Punjab Technical University, India Position: Telecommunication Engineering Student B)Background [CE 1.2] A virtual or mechanical artificial agent is a robot. Practically, a robot is an electro- mechanical machine which is typically guided with the assistance of electronic programming and was able to implement various tasks on its own. Appearance and movements are the common characteristics from which a robot often conveys a sense with the intent or agency of its own. [CE 1.3] The project objective was the building of a unique type of algorithm in terms of achieving a new technology in the robotics field. One of the type was the IR based car with various view in machines for automation. I designed the car to move on a particular line. I implemented the solution which did not contain any special components, such as photo-transistors, IR receiver ICs, etc. I used standard IR led for the detection purpose and it was with the fact that the circuit was simple and easy to build. [CE 1.4] The project nature was the automation of the utility machines which were operated in manual mode for the purpose of removing various obstacles in a remote location. I worked on this concept with my team while using my full technical understanding in the field of telecommunication engineering.

  2. [CE 1.5] Flowchart underneath to show my position in the project. [CE 1.6] My responsibilities were: I selected and implemented IC7805 because it had all the built in features including current limiters and overload protection. I worked on the transmission and receiving side operation. I worked on the obstacle detection with the utilization of the infra-red light and this was reflected well by the object available in front of the sensor. I worked on the memory addressing and register allocation units which assisted well in data management with the compiler. I completed the programmer using the formal data structure and split it into various functions. I implemented the line follower robot smarter version which was utilized for the delivering mail application within an office building. I utilized the IR led for the purpose of detecting and sensing light which assisted in easier implementation of the circuit. I selected DC motor for the purpose of deriving the circuits and implemented the controlling operation as well. C)Personal Engineering Activity [CE 1.7] I started the project with the selection of the components needed for the implementation of the line follower robot. I used a power supply circuit which converted the 220 volts ac to +5 volt dc supply. Furthermore, I used IR sensors along with the microcontroller for implementing the controlling operation in the system. I worked on the dc motor derive circuits for the controlling

  3. of the dc motor as per the provided input. It worked well with the synchronization of the laser light. [CE 1.8] I supplied 5 volt supply which was based on the voltage regulator IC and it simplified the layout and design of the circuit. I selected this IC because it had all the built in features including current limiters and overload protection. It overall supported the circuitry. I used the external capacitors as well in the circuit. I achieved the high capacitance value capacitor in IC with much difficulty and thus I used electrolytic capacitors to work in synchronization with the IC. I used disc ceramic capacitor which was of high value and was readily present within an IC. I did the correct operation with the resistor and LED light of the power supply. It served as an indicator when the power was ON and assisted in discharging the 1000 microfarad capacitor when the power was turned off. [CE 1.9] I used the 7805 voltage regulator IC which was capable of handling load currents up to an ampere. I noted that the IC dissipated enough heat amount when load current was high. I used heat sink with the IC to avoid it getting hotter when the load current reached above 150mA. I added a heat sink which resulted in easy supply of an ampere current from the power supply to the load. I carefully placed the components in term of selecting and allowing room for heat sink to be connected in the circuit. I bent the IC a bit for allowing the heat sink to remain clear of all the other necessary jumpers and components on the breadboard. I made sure to turn off the power supply circuit after finishing the testing operation with +5 volt supply. I implemented the transmitter and receiver side circuits which are shown below. [CE 1.10] I implemented the obstacle detection with the infra-red proximity sensors. I sent the infra-red light via IR-LED which was reflected by the object present in front of the sensor. I picked- up the IR light and detected the reflected IR light accordingly. I used LEDs because these have an electrical properties of producing a voltage difference across its leads when subjected to light. I

  4. used a photo-cell and it was backed with much lower output current. However, I noted that the voltage produced from LEDs can’t be utilized in terms of generating electrical power from light. It was not even able to detect it and this was what I noticed in the schematic. To solve this issue, I used an operational amplifier for accurate detection of micro voltage changes. [CE 1.11] I worked on the embedded system which employed a software and hardware combination for the purpose of performing the required function. It usually linked with the larger system in a reactive and time constrained environment. Before implementing it in a circuit, I made an in-depth research on various features of it and also made thorough research on its applications. I set the software permanently in an embedded systems and this was onto read-only memory which included ROM. [CE 1.12] I implemented the program on C language which had various benefits over other assembly languages and the most important was that there was no significant knowledge needed for the processor instruction set. I worked on the details including register allocation and memory addressing and data was managed with the compiler. I programmed the data with the formal structure and divided it into separate functions. I noted the reduction in the programming and program test time which ultimately enhanced the system efficiency. I worked on the keywords and operational functions which was used for implementing the operation smoothly. I used many standard routine programs including numeric conversions from the supplied and supported C libraries. I implemented the code in such a way that it was reusable. I used C language because of its ANSI standard which made it portable and existing programs ran quickly while synchronizing with the main microcontroller. The final design of the line follower robot is shown below:

  5. D)Summary [CE 1.13] I successfully implemented the smarter version of the line follower robot which can be used for the purpose of delivering mail within an office building. It can also work well with the medications delivery in a hospital. There are various other applications where the implemented technology can be used and it can even end up as the part of autonomous car. My skills in the field of telecommunication engineering were boosted greatly with the completion of this technical project.

  6. Career Episode 2 Analysis of GSM System A)Introduction [CE 2.1] “Analysis of GSM System” was the project completed in the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering at Punjab Technical University, India. Title of Project: Analysis of GSM System Duration: [Date] – [Date] Location: Punjab Technical University, India Position: Student B)Background [CE 2.2]A globally accept standard is the Global system for mobile communication (GSM) for digital cellular communication. The GSM itself is the name of the standardization group which was established in the year 1982 for the purpose of creating a common European mobile telephone standard. It formulated the specifications for the pan-European mobile cellular radio system particularly operating at 900 MHz. The cellular service concept is the utilization of the low-power transmitters in which the frequencies can be reused within the graphical area. [CE 2.3] The project objective was the complete analysis of the GSM system which included various factors such as GSM network identities, channel concepts, cellular concepts, switching system and the BSS interface. I implemented and analyzed various sections and obtained the results while making use of my Telecommunication Engineering skills in the project. [CE 2.4] The nature of the project was the thorough analysis of various sections of GSM system which was achieved with the utilization of Telecommunication Engineering skills in the project. It was the individual project and I was well guided by the project supervisor while completing various milestones of the project.

  7. [CE 2.5] Flowchart underneath to show my position in the project. [CE 2.6] My responsibilities in the project were: I implemented the OMC approach which was regarded as the operation and support system. I worked on the selection of the OSS which worked as the network operation controlled and monitored the system accordingly. I analyzed and implemented the HLR network database which stored and managed the mobile subscriptions belonging to the operator. I worked on the analysis of the MS which resulted in the measurement of the signal strength for the controlling channel and receiving it on the channel and recorded it accordingly. I utilized the TDMA technique for splitting the carrier into eight time slots and assigned the time slots with the specific users. It allowed to handle up to eight conversations by the same carrier. C)Personal Engineering Activity [CE 2.7] I started the project with the research related to the MS registration and roaming when the MS was powered off from the network. I worked as a subscriber and switched power “ON” which resulted in the scanning of the GSM frequencies for special channels terms as control channels. I analyzed the MS which measured the signal strength for the purposing of controlling channel and received it on the channel and recorded it accordingly. The MS tuned to the strongest one as soon as all the channels were measured. I further noted that the MS was powered ON with the MS register which worked with the network when updating the MS’s status to idle. There was the feature of location of the MS which was noticed to be different from the stored location and it

  8. worked with the location update to take place. There was the continued control channel scanning as the MS moved through the network which resulted in ensuring and tuning to the strongest possible channel. I retuned the MS to its original control channel which was informed with the new network of its new location. [CE 2.8] I worked on the analysis of the mobile station which communicated well with the utilization of the radio channel to the base station (BS). I made the base station responsible for the purpose of communication over the air and both to and from the mobile station. I conducted research on each component of the base station and it included transmitters, receivers, antennas and control units. I connected the NSS with the Mobile Station and with the NSS. I made it as in charge of the reception and transmission. I split the BSS into two parts which were the base transceiver station (BTS) and the base station controller (BSC). [CE 2.9] I did the BIS interfacing which was for transmitting the traffic signal and signaling the information among the BTS and the BSC. I used the transmission protocol for sending signaling information of the BIS interface which was linked with the access protocol on the D Channel. I analyzed the air interface which used the time division multiple access (TDMA) technique for the purpose of transmitting and receiving traffic. I made the signaling information among the MS and the BTS. I used the TDMA technique for dividing the carrier into eight time slots. I assigned these time slots to specific users and these were allowed to handle up to eight conversations by the same carrier. [CE 2.10] I used the mobile switching service center (MSC) for performing the telephony switching functions for the mobile network. It was for controlling the calls to and from the other telephone and data systems which included Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), private network, and Public data Networks and other mobile networks. I centralized the HLR network database which stored and managed all the mobile subscriptions belonging to the operator. I used it for the purpose of permanently storing subscription located in the MSC service area. There was one VLR for each MSC in the network and there was the VLR information which stored subscription information. I serviced the MSC with the VLR and it was regarded to be distributed as HLR holding the information stored regarding the subscriber. [CE 2.11] I conducted an in-depth research on the operations and maintenance center (OMC) which was connected with the switching system equipment and it controlled and monitored the GSM system. I controlled the charge and traffic load of the BSS with this OMC. I did the

  9. implementation of the OMC which was termed as the operation and support system (OSS). I selected OSS which was the functional entity from which the network operation controlled and monitored the system. I obtained customer cost-effective support for the centralized, local operation, regional and maintenance activities and these were needed for the GSM network. I obtained the important OSS function which was for providing the network overview and supporting the various maintenance related activities of different maintenance and operational aspects. [CE 2.12] I implemented the quantization which was the main process in the GSM transmission. I obtained value of each sample and obtained the signal amplitude at the time of sampling which was measured and approximated with the signal quantization. I obtained slight error in the process when the signal was quantized and the accuracy degree was dependent on the total number of quantization levels utilized. I used 256 levels in the common telephony whereas in GSM there was the utilization of 8192 levels. I calculated the path loss which occurred when the signal received became signal weaker because of the increasing distance among the BTS and MS. I obtained no obstacle among the transmitting and receiving antennas. I realized that there was the need of establishing new transmission path before the problem reached to an extreme level. D)Summary [CE 2.12] My telecommunication engineering skills were greatly increased with the implementation of the project “Analysis of GSM System”. I worked as the subscriber and fully used my skills while obtaining the scanning results of the GSM frequencies for special channels. I made sure to measure the signal strength for the controlling channel purpose and received it accordingly on the channel. I worked individually on this project and it resulted in enhancing my managing abilities as well as enhancing my technical abilities in the project.

Career Episode 3 RF Capacity Enhancement & Optimization A)Introduction [CE 3.1] “RF Capacity Enhancement & Optimization” was the project which I completed as RF Field Testing Engineer at Kutumbh Care Pvt. Ltd., India. Project Title: RF Capacity Enhancement & Optimization Project Duration: April 2015 – September 2017 Location: Kutumbh Care Pvt. Ltd., India Position: RF Field Testing Engineer B)Background [CE 3.2] In cellular technology, the next generation tool is the LTE system which is typically to follow the present universal mobile telecommunication system with the high speed packet access. There are higher peak data rates which are typically targeted by the LTE system with the higher spectral efficiency, flexible channel bandwidths and lower latency with the system overall cost comparison to its predecessor. In mobile communication, the concept of LTE is considered as the fourth generation with the LTE architecture as the most optimized one. The data exchange process is usually conducted between the base station (eNB) and the UE via air interface. EUTRAN is the main thing for which the base station is its part and all the network services and functions are conducted from it. I analyzed the base station for the purpose of processing the data as per the route. [CE 3.3] The project objective was the implementation of the RF capacity enhancement and optimization for the project on which I was deputed as RF Field Testing Engineer. I used my Telecommunication Engineering skills in the project effectively for the efficient project execution under the guidance of my project manager at Kutumbh Care Pvt. Ltd., India [CE 3.4] The project nature was an in-depth analysis and performance implementation of the RF network particularly for LTE network. This project enabled me to learn new technical concepts in the domain of Telecommunication Engineering and I am very thankful to Kutumbh Care Pvt. Ltd. for putting their trust in me and enabling me to implement my knowledge as RF Field Testing Engineer in the project.

  11. [CE 3.5] Underneath hierarchy shows my position in the project: [CE 3.6] My duties as “RF Field Testing Engineer” were: I conducted data analysis of switch statistics and drive data by conducting drive testing for potential sites. I analyzed network coverage for finding gaps and making recommendations to improve coverage and assisted in improving the recommendations with the building conducting and ground maintenance and inspections. I updated daily logs with site specific information and generated reports by performing audits with the utilization of my Telecommunication Engineering skills. I tested handset software and hardware in live networks particularly in mobile or CDMA. I troubleshoot to perform various tasks which included NB resetting, parameter changing and alarm related issues. C)Personal Engineering Activity [CE 3.7] I started the project with the research being carried out on the parameter measurements at the eNB and the UE. I quantified these measurements with the network performance and aided towards the coding adaptation. I linked the cell traffic with the capacity. I researched on the idle mode of the base station in which it broadcasted the frame protocol measurements. I used the base station for transmitting the RRC connection configuration message and initiated the UE specific measurements. I did the measurement with the type and ID objects along with the quantity and command. I performed the UE measurements and responded to the base station request with the

  12. ID measurement which resulted in obtaining the message report measurement. I also analyzed TDD frame structure which is shown below. [CE 3.8] I did the measurements in this stage which was aimed to adopt the developed equipment compliance with the technological needs. I obtained the measurements for LTE which reflected the actual field environment. I also used MIMO channel emulator for the purpose of close estimation of the signal generators particularly for generating the RF propagation channel. I completed it with the LTE terminals for generating the modulated signals and used vector signal analyzer for the purpose of analyzing the signals. I obtained performance measures along with other appropriate information at the receiver’s end. I performed measurements at the post deployment end which was completed in two steps. I made the CW test drive which was for checking the coverage scenario and implemented the test with the active network traffic for performing the log metrics analysis. [CE 3.9] I optimized the process which contained several steps based on the data driving testing and I tested all the performance parameters which were logged in the field as soon as the network was active. I implemented the test which included the various propagation scenarios along with the models. I used the field data for tuning the models in terms of obtaining the better coverage and network performance. I collected the data and analyzed the performance for finalization of the coverage mainly with the FEMTO and PICO cells. I noted the degraded power levels and recommended the utilization of the FEMTO cells in the LTE. I conducted the optimization process which was the iterative process with no particular steps and I followed the consistent steps which characterized the coverage along with the network performance in the process. [CE 3.10] I faced several challenges related to the implementation of the LTE UE. I used the MIMO technology which was for the utilization of complex equalization and highly reliable techniques. I used MMSE technique in the worst case scenarios and this equalization consumed around 1500 MIPS depicted on 600 different subcarriers. It resulted in possessing a challenge in the implementation of the parallel computation and it minimized the power consumption. I also overcame the memory needs for the coding and decoding which itself was the challenge in the system.

  13. [CE 3.11] I tried to minimize the power consumption in the LTE system and noted that there were less difficult requirements at the base station. I analyzed the challenges with the hardware complexities within the base station equipment. I used BF for the purpose of improving the overall DL performance as BF used antenna arrays which required the adaptive algorithms usage. I operated it automatically and in real time environment. I noted that the BF itself existed in the MIMO system and this was another issue in order to overcome (4G-3G) technology. I enhanced the coexistence with the increment in the interference levels which raised the noise and interference thresholds. I specified the LTE specification with the intermodulation levels because of the network coexistence. I fulfilled all the requirements to the compliance levels and informed all these to the project manager. D)Summary [CE 3.12] I completed my responsibilities as RF Field Testing Engineer under the guidance of project manager and the activities included successful completion of the RF capacity enhancement and optimization. I adopted the modulation schemes along with the OFDMA multiplexing implementation. I modeled the channel models and ensured the proper operation of MIMO system. I analyzed various metrics which were attached with the network behavior. I obtained three statistical propagation channel models which were based on the deterministic approach to identify the LTE channel model parameters. I analyzed the coverage model with the utilization of the MIMO system simulation tool. I analyzed the measurement techniques for the pre and post network deployment. I obtained the four propagation scenarios which were based on the LTE specifications. I overcame the challenges related to the transmission and base stations with the utilization of my Telecommunication Engineering skills.
