  2. Purpose & Content Purpose • This charter is a “living” document that identifies the foundation and core values of the Martin Family. It conveys our fundamental beliefs, provides guidance to the family reunion national committee and outlines a strategy for maintaining our rich heritage and legacy. The Martin Family Reunion Charter National Committee History • The Martin Family Reunion National Committee was established in July 2005. • The creation and existence of the committee is based upon: • The common desire to evolve the Martin Family reunions to the “next level” while also achieving greater planning and fiscal effectiveness and efficiency. • The need to have a national structure because of a vast family presence across the United States as well as family members abroad. • A firm belief that our love, respect and continued fellowship with one another will facilitate our family’s rich heritage and legacy flourishing from generation to generation.

The Martin Family Reunion Charter Our Mission • The National Committee’s mission encompasses multiple tasks and responsibilities such as: • Providing representation for all of the geographical areas where family members reside. • Providing a central collection point for family member’s ideas, suggestions and views regarding family reunion matters. • Providing a national entity that is capable of assisting local family reunion committees whenever needed. • Communicating and promoting family events and activities. • Providing a positive example for future generations to come.

The Martin Family Reunion Charter Our Values • We proclaim the following family values, founded and based upon the “Word of God”, as our foundation for all that we strive to accomplish: • Enduring Faith – "Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;" Hebrews 12:2 • Strength Through Family Unity – "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Psalms 133:1 • Honor, Respect & Care for the Elder Family Members – "Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth." Ephesians 6:1-3 • Honesty, Truth & Integrity – "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves." Philippians 2:3 • Raising & Teaching Our Children –"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

The Martin Family Reunion Charter Our Purpose • We strive to develop and promote family cohesiveness and unity through scheduled events and/or media resources such as: • Reoccurring Martin Family Reunions • Periodic Distribution of the Martin Family Email List • Utilization of “No Cost” Instant Messaging (IM) Tools such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger & Skype • Publication of the Martin Family Newsletter and hosting the Martin Family Website • These resources and activities facilitate: • Information sharing & timely updates • Global announcement of significant events & associated dates • Introduction of family members & their professions • Family member Achievement & Accomplishment Recognition • Dialog exchange among family members

The Martin Family Reunion Charter Our Strategy • In order to achieve our Mission, the national committee: • Seeks to facilitate and oversee the planning, organizing, directing, and effective communications of all family reunions. • Seeks to investigate additional ways to enhance our legacy and promote continued fellowship with one another. • The National Committee’s Action Plan involves: • Regularly scheduled meetings to discuss active projects and current or future family reunion matters. • Discussion and dissemination of new family reunion ideas, concepts or suggestions to ALL family members for review and feedback. • Brainstorming and identifying methods to minimize the financial impacts & costs associated with attending family reunions.

The Martin Family Legacy The Martin Family Legacy • Legacy is defined as – “something bequeathed, left or established for future generations”. • The Martin Family legacy can be traced all the way back to Elizabeth Martin, Ben Martin’s grandmother.  At the time of Emancipation, she and her family lived in the state of South Carolina.  Elizabeth Martin first established residence in Arkansas on the banks of the Saline River near the Longview Ferry crossing.  That point on the river where she settled was named for her and is still called the “Lizzy Landing”. • Benjamin “Ben” & Rosemary “Nina” Martin –“Continuing The Legacy” • Two lives that joined together, planted the seed and created what we call today the “Ben Martin Family”. • The Martin Family is not just an ordinary group of people, but a family that believes that through Christ, “all things are possible”. • Built upon the gospel of Jesus Christ,the Martin Family is a family that can and has reached out to others, displayed love, compassion and most importantly, is NOT afraid to pray!

How Can We Sustain The Martin Legacy? • Understand and Support our Mission • Acknowledge and Adhere to our Values • Remember and Embrace our Purpose • Exercise and Follow our Strategy • Take pride in and commit to upholding our Heritage • And remember…“Never be afraid to think outside of the box!”

  10. “Lifetime Honorary” Committee Members Declaration Declaration Statement The direct descendents of Ben & Nina Martin are hereby designated as “LIFETIME HONORARY” COMMITTEE MEMBERS. This prestigious position has been established for the purpose of demonstrating our deep appreciation to these descendents and recognizing their dedication, sacrifice and “role model” examples displayed over the years. Because this is an “Honorary” position, these members are not required to participate in the routine meetings or activities of the five active committee members. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

National Committee – Membership Details Number of National Committee Members The “active” national committee shall consist of five members who represent the five regions covering the United States and international areas where family members reside. (see pages 15 & 16 of this document) Committee Member Term Limits • The time limit for each term of committee service is two years. • Members cannot serve consecutive terms unless warranted and approved by the active committee. • Past committee members are eligible to serve non-consecutive terms. • The two year term limit allows new member selections to occur during family reunion years. Committee Member Criteria & Eligibility • Must be a Martin Family Member. • Active Committee Members are required to attend Martin Family Reunions. • Commitment to supporting and upholding our family traditions, heritage and legacy. • Commitment to the guidance and criteria presented in the Martin Family Charter.

National Committee – Membership Details (cont’d) Committee Member Selection • Selection of new Committee Members will be done by random drawing (i.e., placing names in a hat and selecting a member for each region). • The selection process will also include selecting an alternate member for each region. Committee Positions Treasurer Secretary Other positions TBD, as required Committee Voting Each committee member has ONE vote. The opportunity for “deadlock” voting is eliminated by having five board members. Committee Meetings The committee will meet once a month. More frequent meetings can be scheduled, as required. A meeting agenda will be developed and distributed to committee members. Meeting minutes and notes will be recorded and distributed to committee members for review.

National Committee – Membership Details (cont’d) Committee Communication As previously stated,multiple media avenues such as the family website, newsletters and personal interface will be used to disseminate information and solicit feedback from the general family population. Committee Member Transition • The current committee will conduct an initial meeting with the newly designated committee during a time frame near or at the end of the family reunion at which the new committee was named. • The purpose of this meeting is to discuss handoff projects and/or outstanding committee issues in an effort to ensure a smooth and complete transition. • The outgoing committee (or a designated member) will participate (most likely telephonically), in the first committee meeting conducted by the new committee • The intent is to reiterate any handoff projects or issues. • This activity also serves as the final involvement in committee business for previous members.

  14. National Committee – Membership Details (cont’d) MFR Charter Revisions As previously stated,this charter is a “living” document. As such, it is understood that the contents are not “set in stone” and may periodically warrant revision or modification. After initial publication and distribution, the following revision and updating guidelines apply: • The National Committee History, Our Mission, Our Values, Our Purpose, Our Strategy and Martin Family Legacy sections are philosophical in nature and should not require revision or modification. • Proposed revisions or modifications to The National Committee Membership Details section must be presented to, and approved by a majority number of Martin Family members prior to inclusion into the charter or implementation. • The National Committee Members Contact Information & Region and Regional Map sections should be updated to reflect the new committee members prior to the first meeting of the new committee.
