  2. You need to plan the trip • Tell someone where you are going • Tell someone when you are leaving and when you are expected back • Make sure to know all of the precautions of the area

  3. What to wear • NO COTTON!!!! • DRESS IN LAYERS! • Be sure to take extra socks, and warmer or waterproof jackets(even if its not supposed to rain) • Take appropriate footwear

  4. What to take with you • Waterproof fire starter (or fire starter in a plastic bag) • Pocket or Swiss army knife • More food than you need • Radio or cell phone • A COMPASS!!!

  5. What to do if you get lost • Stop…don’t keep moving • Think…think about where you are • Observe…think if you can recognize your surroundings and if it is a safe situation • Plan…what are you going to do next?

  6. How to start a fire • Find paper strips, tissue, or thin DRY bark • Light match and add to pile • Blow softly on fire until it starts to build • Slowly add twigs, and wait until it builds • Move on to add branches and then logs

  7. How to make a fishing hook • Whittle to ends of small sticks to an angle • Whittle one of the sticks to a sharp point on the other side • Tie angled ends together with small cords or nylon string • Tie a long string to the other end for a line

  8. Making a lean-to shelter • Build a 3 (three) foot layer of moss, leaves, and/or pine bows • Make a pine bow roof about one to two feet above the moss layer • Add mud, leaves, and sticks to the roof to make it more waterproof
