Join us in a statewide project to assist communities affected by hurricanes and prepare for upcoming seasons. Help rebuild severely damaged areas, support migrant communities, and engage in preparedness initiatives. Together, we can make a difference!
E N D
Overall Goal: For all schools to help their community heal from the last hurricane season and or help the community prepare for the upcoming season.
Different types of Communities • Areas that suffered severe damage from direct impact or heavy flooding (Examples include: Miami, Florida Keys, Jacksonville, Naples) • Communities that formed because of migration to Florida from affected islands and areas (Central and South Florida) • Communities that were hit but did not suffer long lasting damage
Communities with Severe Damages Communities hit the hardest may be limited with resources as families and businesses are still reeling from financial hardship. Due to this, low cost projects such as these may be used in order to help the community: • Surveys of useful items during a storm to be used in safety campaigns • Safety campaigns sharing what to collect and how to properly prepare • Volunteering events to help low income families or struggling families (Examples: supplies, yard clean ups, information and contacts)
Areas with Many Migrants • Across the state schools can partner with one of 12 food banks under Feeding Florida in order to organize a food drive in preparation for the hurricane season. This should be done in September as hurricanes are most likely to occur in October. For more information on this, please contact FASC State President, Alex, at: alexrutledge1030@gmail.com • Buddy systems can be put into place to partner new transfer students with leadership members so students can feel more accepted in their new school
Areas that were not affected • Schools in communities that were not affected can help their community prepare for the upcoming hurricane season through supply drives to build preparedness kits. • Needed supplies can be found at https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit
