Steps towards Certification • Choice of certifier • market requirements & certification standard(s) • must have the required accreditations to certify these standards • EN45011/ISO 65 and/or IFOAM accreditation • competent, good service • good reputation, well-accepted by buyers • price comparison ? • Application procedures • send information about organic project • receive information about prices & procedures • complete application documents • approve offer/sign contract • agree on date for first inspection when internal inspection will be ready (min. 80%)
Focus of External Inspection Internal Inspection • This is checked by: • evaluation of ICS manual • farm file checking at ICS office • comparison with results of re-inspections • interviews with staff • review of farmers lists • overall risk assessment by inspector Internal Approval & Sanctions Internal Documentation Training & Staff Qualifications Monitoring Product Flow The external inspection verifies whether the ICS is designed and implemented well so that the organic integrity is sufficiently guaranteed
Re-Inspection of Farmers (Sample Inspections) Inspection of fields Inspection of storage facilities Interview with farmer Checking of documentation Cross-check with results of internal control
