  1. Atmosphere/ Jetstream

  2. Exosphere- 500 km and beyond • Outermost layer • Very few air molecules • No clear boundary between this layer and space

  3. Thermosphere - 95km to 500 km • Warmest layer of the atmosphere • Reflects radio waves • Lower layer is called the ionosphere, this is where auroras take place.

  4. Mesosphere – 45 km to 95km • Coldest part of the atmosphere

  5. Stratosphere – 10km to 45 km • Ozone layer located here • Little to no water vapor • Tropopause- (between strato and tropo) Jet stream is located here

  6. Troposphere – ground to 10km • Closest to the ground • 99% of all weather takes place here.

  7. Jet Stream

  8. A wind current, which moves around Earth capturing and changing anything in its path. • If forms high in the tropopause, between two air masses of very different temperatures. • The greater the temp difference, the faster the wind blows in the jet stream. • This “river” of air can reach speeds up to 643.7 km/hr and be several hundred miles wide. • Usually form in the winter when there is a greater contrast in temp of cold air masses and warm air masses • Jet stream does NOT cause weather conditions, but exists because of certain weather conditions.
