High Expectations The concept of high expectations is premised on the philosophical and pedagogical belief that a failure to hold all students to high expectations effectively denies them access to a high-quality education, since the educational achievement of students tends to rise or fall in direct relation to the expectations placed upon them.

Wisdom from “Olive to Run” • People who are told they are awful or incapable of doing something will eventually begin believing they are. • Once you pigeon hole someone or even yourself it is extremely difficult to get out. • Having high expectations often yields high results. • Patterns and trends are contagious, but you have the choice to change the direction. • Proving those who say you can’t wrong, is one of the best feelings in the world.   5. News ELA News ELA is a website that offers free current events and news articles for teachers and students. They have hundreds of articles that are updated weekly. Once you sign up for an account, you can view the articles online or print them out. You can even use the scroll bar to change Lexile to support everyone in your classroom at the appropriate instructional level. Amazing!

Teaching Expectations CHAMPsclassroom management system helps you provide instructional procedures in which your students become responsible, motivated, and highly engaged in the specific task at hand. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? I personally have used the system and it really does work amazingly well when used consistently. Ready to learn more?

  9. C.H.A.M.P.S. (For All Ages) Use the CHAMPs acronym to define detailed behavioral expectations for EACH instructional approach that you use. Here is the CHAMPs acronym: Conversation Help Activity Movement Participation Success Click here for a classroom example of a CHAMPS Chart.

  10. Conversation Conversation: Can students converse during this activity? About what? With whom? For how long? There are lots of example charts online, such as this one.

  11. Help Help: How do students get your attention for help? How do students get questions answered? What should they do while they wait for you? You need to let them know for each type of activity.

  12. Activity Activity: What is the expected end product of this activity? What is the task or objective? What is your goal?

  13. Movement Movement: For what reasons can students get out of their seats during this activity? Do they need permission to do so? Remember, this changes for the type of activity, so be specific!

  14. Participation Participation: What behavior shows that students are participating or not participating? You need to let your students know what this looks like for each type of activity.

  15. Success Success: There are no questions for this one. When CHAMPs expectations are met, students will be successful. This is a great time to share a website called RubiStar though. Rubrics are another great way for teachers to be crystal clear about their expectations!

  25.  ITBS Algebra To finish an engineering degree in just four years, students need to start algebra in the eight grade at the latest. Good luck to all the seventh graders who will be taking the ITBS Algebra readiness test this week. This test provides educators with the most up-to-date assessment of algebra readiness available. It was designed and developed according to NCTM standards.

In essence, they are clearinghouses of educational videos that cover most school subjects, categorized by subject and education level.  WatchKnowLearnhas a review panel of educators and educational video experts that vet videos from first-time submitters before posting.  The Teaching Channel bills itself as "a video showcase of inspiring and effective teaching practices," and publishes great original videos with tips and lesson plans, searchable by subject, grade level, and topic.

  28. January 23rd National Handwriting Day The purpose of National Handwriting Day is to alert the public to the importance of handwriting. National Handwriting Day is a chance for all of us to re-explore the purity and power of handwriting. Despite concern by stationary, paper companies, and pen and pencil manufacturers that the electronic world will shrink demand for their products. But, indeed, statistics show that pen (or pencil) and paper are alive and well, with a growing demand.
