  1. SPRAY FOAM REMOVAL LTD SPRAY FOAM ROOFING VS SPRAY FOAM INSULATION What you need to know

  2. KNOW THE BASICS Is the spray foam used for roofing the same as the foam used for interior wall insulation? Since Spray Foam Removal ltd has been installing spray foam roof insulation for over 25 years, let's take a look at the experts' perspective.

  3. WE USE SPRAY FOAM IN A VARIETY OF WEIGHTS. Spray foam used for roofing is referred to as 3lb foam. Therefore, 3 pounds weigh one cubic foot that is 1ft x 1ft x 1ft in size. Spray foam used for insulation is referred to as 2lb foam. This means that a cubic foot, measuring 1ft x 1ft x 1ft, weighs 2 pounds. It's the same size, but it weighs differently.

  4. CLOSED-CELL AND OPEN- CELL Closed-cell foam is defined as any foam weighing 2 pounds or more. This means that spray foam used in roofing (3 pounds) and spray foam used in insulation (2 pounds) are both closed-cell. While this is true, there are spray foam insulation contractors who use 0.5 lb. foam. The main distinction between open- and closed-cell R-values is how they are calculated. Closed-cell insulation achieves its R- value by trapping cell gases. The R-value of an open cell is created by trapping air for insulation. The more trapped air that is trapped inside those open cells, the higher your R-value. Open-cell spray foam has an R-value of 3.7 per square inch. Closed-cell spray foam has an R-value of 6.6 per square inch. One disadvantage of using open-cell foam for wall insulation is that it must be covered with a vapor barrier poly. Closed-cell insulation serves as a vapor barrier, insulation, and air barrier all in one.

  5. SPRAY FOAM ROOFING COSTS MORE The higher density is one of the primary reasons that 3lb foam costs more. It takes more chemicals to make the same 1' x 1' square. A set of 2lb foam should produce 4500-5000 BF (board feet), while a set of 3lb should produce around 2600 BF. Why they both are different? There is a difference, as UV rays are something spray foam insulation does not have to contend with. They do not have to deal with the sun since spray foam insulation is only used indoors. If you're not aware, UV rays degrade spray foam by 1/16th of an inch per year on average. A roofing contractor adds two layers of coating on top of the foam to protect it from UV rays in a roofing application. A spray foam roofing contractor will also incorporate embedded granules into the top coating to increase strength and durability in order to withstand foot traffic, wind, and blowing debris.

  6. ISSUES WITH APPLICATION FOR SPRAY FOAM CANNOT BE APPLIED TO A WET SURFACE. BOTH HAVE THE POSSIBILITY OF APPLICATOR ERROR. COMMERCIAL ROOFING, SPRAY FOAM INSULATION IS USED. INTERIOR INSULATION WITH SPRAY FOAM ROOFING BOTH HAVE TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS.
