  5. Craig is a football player training over the summer for next season. The coach demands that all players come in at 6:00 AM and lift weights until 8:00 AM, when practice begins. Craig gets there at 5:00 AM to begin his training. Dedicated, hardworking, overachiever

  6. Anna volunteered to help Kylie clean her house. When Anna washed the mirrors, Kylie asked her if she used paper towels instead of newspapers. When Anna admitted that she had, Kylie asked her to redo them. Then, while Anna was sweeping, Kylie corrected her on her technique. "Don't just push the dirt around, Anna. SWEEP it," Kylie told Anna. Bossy, unappreciative, perfectionist

  7. Kelvin found a wallet on the ground. He opened up the wallet and saw an old woman's ID card. Kelvin took the ID out of the wallet, walked to the woman's house, and returned the wallet to her. Honest, compassionate, honorable

  8. Corey came back from the bathroom and noticed that her rainbow pencil was missing. She looked around the room and saw that Beth was using a rainbow pencil. Corey started crying uncontrollably and ran out of the room. Emotional, crybaby, sensitive

  10. INDIRECT VS DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION

  11. INDIRECT VS DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION Direct Characterization: The author directly tells you a trait or characteristic of a character. Indirect Characterization: The reader has to infer traits or characteristics based on the text evidence-the author does not directly tell you.

  12. Indirect CharacterizationS.T.E.A.L. Authors use indirect characterization to SHOW instead of TELL the reader what a character is like! They indirectly show us through the character’s speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks.

  13. S-Speech-What does the character say? -How does the character speak (tone)? S-Upbeat S-energetic

  14. T-ThoughtsWhat is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings? T-stir-crazy

  15. E-Effect on OthersWhat is revealed through the character’s effect on the others? How do others feel or behave in reaction to the character? E-obnoxious

  16. A-ActionsWhat does the character do? How does the character behave? A-dangerous

  17. L-LooksWhat does the character look like? What facial expressions does the character make? How does the character dress? L-depressed
