  2. 2 • Traditional Ivatan society was hierarchal-the village chief called mangpus • At thetop, assisted by district subalterns called mapolon. • The community is calledkumaidian.

  3. 4 • Arranged marriage was the traditional custom among the Ivatan • The boy’s family wasexpected to give half of the dowry while the groom saved up for his part. • When the girl's family agreed to the man's propose, the man will present his presentation to the girl's family.

  5. 5 • Ivatan buried their dead in large earthen jarscalled padapaday in the sandy littoral plains.

  6. 6 • They believe in Anitu • the belief in anitu has been reinforced by Catholic beliefslike the suffering of souls in purgatory

  8. 8 • Intertribalhostilities involved men only • Customary law prohibited the harming ofwomenfolk since they were the tribal procurers of food during wartime.

  12. 12 • The chief means of livelihood of more than 75 percent of the Ivatan labor force areagriculture and fishing. • The rest of the Ivatan are employed in the service sector • Including the government or public sector. • Other food crops are camote or sweet potato, cassava, gabi or tuber

  13. 13 • The Ivatan do not worship spirits or invisible beings. • They have rituals usually consists of the killing of an animal, spilling part of its blood on the ground • Another ritual calledkapayvanuvanuwa (preparing the seaport) • They do this every15 March to honor the supernatural entities of the sea.
