Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is an artificial insemination medical procedure for treating infertility. The sperm of the male is washed and concentrated, is placed directly in the women’s uterus around the time her ovary releases one or more eggs for fertilization. Previous to this procedures’ inception, artificial insemination placed the sperm in the women’s vagina. Though this is easy comparatively, it is not as successful as the IUI procedure.
In intrauterine insemination the sperm has to swim into the fallopian tube and fertilize a waiting egg, resulting in a normal pregnancy. If this happens then IUI is successful. Based on the reasons for infertility, IUI can be coordinated with patients’ normal cycle or with fertility medications. The first two things that the doctor recommends after the diagnosis of infertility are intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization.
Doctors quote that in-vitro fertilization (IVF) has a much higher success rate on the first try, but it is more expensive than intrauterine insemination (IUI). Intrauterine insemination is a comparatively uncomplicated process. The sperm gets into women’s uterus through a catheter rather than natural sex. The vaginal canal is really an obstacle path for sperm. It's an acidic environment and sperm often doesn't survive the journey into uterus
Those sperms which make it to the uterus have to be at the exact spot where the egg comes out of the fallopian tube at exactly the right time to fertilize it. If you think about all the odds of all of those things coming together, it might seem like a miracle that anyone ever gets pregnant. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is supposed to take the speculation out of conception and do away with the hazards of the vaginal canal by bypassing it entirely.
The woman has to produce many eggs to increase her chances of conceiving a baby. A women, usually produces only one mature egg per cycle. The doctor puts the women on a week's worth of Clomid to stimulate more eggs to maturity. Clomid is an old, familiar fertility drug, and it's safe. After a week of taking it, the woman has to go back to the doctor for a sonogram. The sonogram shows how many mature eggs are there in one ovary, ready to be released. It has to be controlled exactly when they are released.
To do this, the woman has to go home and inject herself in the stomach with a drug, meant to stimulate her ovulation. The male has to provide sperm sample after this. The lab techs will wash the sperm. This is a process where they remove the seminal fluid and any sub-standard sperm and group the best sperm. The doctor then inserts a catheter into women’s vagina that goes up into her uterus. The doctor then pours the concentrated sperm through the catheter.
Once the catheter is removed, the women has to lay there for 15 minutes to give the sperm time to find the eggs and fertilize one or more of them. If the woman has mature eggs by now, then surely one of them would get fertilized and she gets pregnant. After two weeks she can take a pregnancy test. If the woman gets pregnant then the procedure is a success.
