  2. Description • ICSI stands for intracytoplasmic sperm injection. This special method of artificial insemination involves the direct fertilisation of an egg cell in a laboratory using a selected sperm cell. ICSI treatments are carried out if the man’s sperm demonstrates reduced quality or limited mobility, or if there is a limited number of sperm available. • Conventional in vitro fertilisation (IVF) involves mixing the egg cell with tens of thousands of sperm cells in a test tube. If the sperm quality is insufficient, or if not enough sperm cells are produced, a conventional IVF procedure does not have a good chance of being successful – however this is not the case with intracytoplasmic sperm injection. The advantage of the ICSI treatment method is that it only requires a few sperm cells. In a laboratory, a single sperm cell is selected and then directly injected into the egg’s cellular fluid using microinjector

  3. ICSI Treatment • ICSI treatment is used for men with infertility issues. This treatment is recommended to people with the following conditions: • Low sperm count • Poor morphology (abnormal shape) or motility of the sperm( the sperms are not able to reach the egg) • when IVF is not successful • Ejaculation problems • Need to use frozen sperms • Surgically retrieved sperms • ICSI Treatment Procedure • The treatment procedure begins with the normal IVF process in which ovulation stimulation drugs is provided to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Progress will be monitored through vaginal ultrasound scans and blood tests to confirm adequate hormone levels for the release and maturation of the eggs. The eggs retrieval process is same as IVF and each egg is inserted into a single sperm.

However, the main use of ICS is for significant male infertility cases wherein IVF with ICSI involves the use of specialized micromanipulation tools and equipment and inverted microscopes that enable embryologists to select and pick up individual sperm in a specially designed ICSI needle.
