final project Occupy uc&csu universities

This project explores the intersection of social justice and rising tuition costs in the context of recent "occupy" movements, particularly focusing on the California State University (CSU) system's decision to raise tuition by 9%. It argues that such increases are unjustifiable given the financial struggles of students. Through interviews with professors and affected students, as well as footage from protests, the project aims to highlight the broader issues of educational funding and its implications for social equity.

  2. Social Justice • Definition of social justice: Social justice generally refers to the idea of creating an egalitarian society or institution that is based on the principles of equality and solidarity, that understands and values human rights, and that recognizes the dignity of every human being. • Education and Social Justice By J. Zajda, S. ... • en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social justice

  3. Focus of project • There are many “occupy,” movements going on around the country right now. Most people are looking at the 99% and 1% economic protesters and rioters. The “occupy,” movement I would like to focus on for my project are the underlying issues regarding the reasons for the increase in student tuition over the past few years. • Just yesterday, 11-16-2011, the CSU board of trustee’s voted to increase tuition next semester by 9%!

  4. How does this relate to SJ? • I feel as though this project related to social justice because in my mind it is not socially justifiable to increase tuition rates on students who already struggle to get by through college. • I plan on conducting and interview with a professor, a current CSU or UC students paying higher tuition rates. Then I will compile footage together of protests along with a narrative to complement the video.

  5. You Tube clips • Berkeley/Oakland join forces http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IUAKNJrFpY -Defunding of public education http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvu52xkccbY -Protest of UC tuition increase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDQrdHGuWss

  6. Concluding thoughts • Is it socially justifiable to increase tuition costs on students for the mismanagement of money by UC,CSU, and governments officials over the past few years/decades? • Questions/comments?
