  1. Spartacus The roman gladiator/slave of many accomplished things. By; Lizzie Powell 

Spartacus • Spartacus was one of the most famous and remembered gladiators in Roman history. • He was a accomplished military leader and was a Thracian leader of the slaves in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. • Gladiators were sold slaves. Spartacus did not think this was right. Although, he was a gladiator/slave himself.

Spartacus and the Slave Rebellion • Spartacus had been born in Thrace and received training in a Roman army, probably as an auxiliary, before becoming a slave. • He was sold, in 73 B.C., into the service of Lentulus Batiates, a man who taught at a ludus for gladiators in Capua, 20 miles from Mt. Vesuvius, in Campania. • That same year Spartacus and two Gallic gladiators led a riot at the school. Of about 200 gladiator slaves, less than 80 escaped, using kitchen tools as weapons.

Gladiator History • Gladiators were trained fighters that entertained audiences in the ancient Roman Empire. • Some fought to death, but not all. • The first gladiator fight in Rome took place in 264 BC. • Gladiator fights became less and less popular. Not everyone enjoyed watching them & some Romans refused to attend the games. • The gladiators took their name from the Latin word gladius. Early gladiators were outfitted with an ornately wrought visored helmet, a shield and an armored sleeve worn on the right arm.

Fun facts! • NAME: Spartacus • OCCUPATION: Folk Hero, Warrior • BIRTH DATE: c. 109 BCE • DEATH DATE: c. 71 BCE • Spartacus and his wife met in a holding cell! • Spartacus became a slave when he was around 13 years old. • Spartacus was crucified, causing his death. • Spartacus became such a figure, there is a movie about him & his life story. • "I will endure to be burned, to be bound, to be beaten, and to be killed by the sword" [uri, vinciri, verberari, ferroque necari]. This oath bound him so that he was no longer truly free.
