A short background 19 years in Financial Markets Roles include Senior Trader Markets Accountant/Operations Manager Senior Financial Controller – Global Markets Division Big 4 Capital Markets consultant Various project management roles (IT and accounting, trading, tax systems) Group Treasurer of an ASX listed manufacturer CFO diversified group including international hedge fund, horse stud, residential property development, commercial property portfolio, cafe, IT software development in Australia and Hong Kong CFO of a residential building group Business Advisory and Management Consulting
  3. What is a Treasurer’s role? Has responsibility and oversight for a company’s funds Maintaining relationships with banks, investors, and funders Managing and forecasting cashflow and working capital Understand the operations of the business and how various areas affect the capital and cashflow of the business Manage risk
  4. What’s a CFO’s role Responsible for the big picture accounting and auditing processes c.f. Financial Controller Business manager who is able to participate in corporate strategy Provides other executives with sound financial advice Public face of the organisation both internally and externally

Differences/Similarities Treasurer is more specific and operational e.g. treasurer looks after cash management whereas CFO is responsible for the overall financial health and direction Treasurer usually a subordinate of the CFO Both positions require accounting acumen Both are senior management positions
  6. Moving from Treasurer to CFO Become a business strategist Understand all parts of the business – sales, marketing, operations, finance. Have an accounting degree and preferably a CA or CPA Adopt a hands on approach with business and commercial divisions Soft skills Start thinking like a member of the Board and anticipate what they are thinking about Get involved in projects that will enhance your understanding of the broader issues Network – internally and externally
  7. A Board position Network and market yourself Develop your risk management and strategy skills Look for a NFP Board – good place to develop Board skills and protocols and to widen your network Utilise/emphasise your risk management skills
  8. Getting ready for the move Look at Ads on career websites and pick up the attributes they are looking for and do a gap analysis Look what the market wants rather than what you want May need to step outside the company you are in to get recognised May need to consider a sideways step to facilitate the larger step Think like a marketer – job search involves differentiation Network, network, network Plan early Look at the ‘Why’ and the ‘How’ will take care of itself
