The transition from newspaper publisher to president of his own company was natural and he leads one of the fastest-growing public relations firms in Northern California. The firm provides strategic marketing communications counsel to one of the largest non-profits in the East Bay and one of the Bay Area’s premier mentoring and scholarship organizations for disadvantaged youth.

  3. Five Leadership Essentials • The path to becoming a trusted advisor is paved with integrity. • Today’s presentation provides a guide to walk that path, challenging as it may be throughout one’s career.

  4. Empathy • The best leaders try to understand the perspectives of those they lead. • They endeavor to think like and learn from their employees. • If the leader gets this right, others enjoy following.

  5. Trust • There are times when you don’t know the answer. • Never fake it. • Exhibiting confidence in others who know more than you about the situation is a strong signal of leadership.

  6. Develop Those Around You • Give those you work with room to grow. • Guide their professional development by offering: • Assignments with increasing responsibility • Continuing education opportunities

  7. Avoid Office Politics • Don’t play the office politics game. • Walking with integrity and honesty is the path of least resistance to leadership in any organization.

  8. Develop Expertise in One Area • Leaders cultivate a working knowledge of many areas of their business. • To rise above, carve out one area of specialty and know it better than anyone else.
