  1. Two BadgesThe Lives Of Mona Ruiz By: Gaby Garcia March 5,2010

  2. Introduction • Two badges: the lives of Mona Ruiz is based on a true story a woman’s struggles to escape gang life. • Mona Ruiz grew up in Santa Ana, California during 1970s and 1980s. • She was the second child in eight in a family. • She had a loving family and a special bond with her father Raymond Sandoval. • She joined a gang called F-Troop in Santa Ana California. • The “Two Badges” of the book title; her silver and gold police shield and the faded tattoo on her wrist from her gang days-symbolizes the disparate worlds of 37-year old Ruiz.

  3. A little preview… • As a young girl growing up in a barrio in central Santa Ana back in the 1060s, Mona Ruiz would listen to her father praise the police for being “Soldiers of Christ”. In chapter 5 “Jumping In” is mostly about when they got jumped in the gang of F-Troop. Usually when a gang member/s get jumped into the gang the would usually get at least 5 other gang members and start hitting the other gang members for several minutes. After that they would choose a name; the attackers, friends, were holding her up, hugging and slapping her sore back in congratulations. Bloodied and bruised, she was now one of the F-Troop member. Many gangster are into drugs such as: PCP, marijuana, heroin. They would sell the drugs do them n make money. More drugs meant more money, more money, and more guns too.

  4. About Mona Ruiz life… In 1989, Mona Ruiz joined the Santa Ana police department(California). She has worked patrol, gangs, and narcotics. A native of Santa Ana, she became a police officer after overcoming her youthful involvement wit gangs and an abusive marriage. This absorbing memoir charts. Ruiz’s journey toward self-identity, tracing the tortuous path of her life. A life in which Ruiz assumed contradictory roles; gang chola, high school drop-out, disowned daughter, battered wife, welfare mother, student, and police woman. At each step in the journey, Ruiz faced violence, ridicule, and questioning. She nevertheless prevailed in exchanging her badges of social defiance for one of protecting her community.

  5. What I thought about the book… • "Two Badges" gives great insight into the life of a female police officer with a past that she chose to learn from instead of becoming victim to it. This book would be a very useful tool in today's educational system. Youth today would benefit from this life story and the writer's wonderful example of hard work and dedication. There is something to be said for a female that has been through so much and yet overcame it all to become the person she is today...strong, hard working, and above all a well rounded, down to earth person. This world could use more officers like Mona Ruiz.
